Didn't want to limit the discussion to the Rangnick thread and couldn't find a similar thread so decised to create this one.
Am I the only one uncomfrotable with how we have handled players with expiring contracts? I have been had the feeling for a while that these players should not be involved in the team and the Lingard news for me has confirmed why I have been uneasy.
Over the last few months, players with exoiring contracts have played prominent roles in the squad, many times getting places ahead of promising young players, who we see as our future. Rangnick has often insisted on putting out his "strongest team". Ralf has regularly played a player that is out of contract and was forced to stay in January. Matic, Mata, Pogba have been regular members of matchday squads. Was this a mistake? Do we feel this has in anyway undermined the season?

I think so. The dressing room doesn't become toxic instantly. When Rashford screamed knobhead at his captain I knew things were bad. The only solution is to sell all or most of them who created the problems.

I've been pondering this also, any player that is not working towards being here next season shouldn't be involved in the matchday squad.
Contract expiring players, If they have indicated they're willing to run their time here down. Bench or U23's. No messing.

As long as they are still performing it's fine to keep playing them. Just because they are leaving doesn't necessarily mean they won't try their best.

However, most of them haven't been performing. Lingard in particular should have been phased out.

The exception would be if they have screwed the club over somehow, making the club believe they were going to sign a new contract and then refusing to and leaving us in a bad position where we can no longer get something by selling them. In that case drop them, but that doesn't really apply to any of our guys. We've more refused to sell them even when they've made it obvious they would like to go.

When was this?

I think it's pretty normal any manager interim or not will play his most experienced players in trying to achieve their goal. In our case top 4. It failed. Just as it could of done if we'd thrown on the kids. Don't think there's any winning formula when the squad is so broken.

You are essentially suggesting that the club shouldn't respect the spirit of the contract they agreed upon. That's one of the most toxic thing that fans come up with.

Depends on the player and circumstances. Pogba and Lingard can get lost. Mata and Matic I have no problem with.

Contract situation has been utterly diabolical for far too long, also players grossly overpaid as well

Disagree with the OP. We should play the players without worrying about contract, only thing that matters is 'is the player good enough' or can he contribute better than other players.

It's a contract and players are just fulfilling their contract. Very rarely clubs freeze the players whose contract is about to expire.

Mbappe plays for psg and is their best forward, ousmane Dembele has been great in the 2nd half of this season and Rudiger has been good for Chelsea. Our lot are just bad or over the hill. Matic has been performing well over his last 2 games.

We’ve done it time and time again, gave contracts to players who weren’t deserving and now we aren’t giving them to players who aren’t good enough. My issue is that they should sell the ones that they don’t want rather than letting them go for free. Lingard was a good example, his stock was high after his loan spell last season and we could’ve got £20-30m for him, now he’s worth nothing even if he had 2 years left on his deal. Pogba was retained based on how everyone thought the team would progress this season with all the new signings and I understand why they didn’t drop him in January due to needing to finish in champions league places. Mata and matic have played big part roles and is the right time to move the wages off the books.

Pereira is another dud and I’ll be glad he’s gone, whether it’s for a fee or not he’s not good enough.

We gave Nani a massive contract a few years back and he was in the back of a poor season so I do think the club has learned somewhat.

Bruno contract extension was strange timing, wait til the end of the season to sort it out. He’s been really poor for a couple of months now and below average this season.

If we froze out the underperforming players and expiring contract players we would have no team.
