How Many Think We Need Players Who Can Dribble/Carry The Ball?

Regardless of how well we've done in recent years, I've always felt that we lack players who can actually dribble or carry the ball since Cantona left.

Apart from the inconsistent Giggs, & possibly Scholes, Ole, occasionally Tweety & O'Shea & now Ruud in recent matches, I always feel that our players generally somehow don't tend to/feel uncomfortable/cannot dribble past players or out of danger or lose the ball too often when caught in possession.

Thus I feel the need to buy players with ability on the ball, regardless of their positions, be it your Kewells, Duffs, Nedveds, Ronaldinhos...

Fergie made it clear after the Real game, that one of the main differences between the teams was that they had 4/5 players who could "beat their man", thus not allowing us to double-up on the man in possession.
Probably need one/two who can, preferably on the wings.

The passing/movement game is far more effective than the dribble based game IMO. I will point out, as somebody has brought up the Madrid games, how many of their goals were scored by a player "beating their man" as opposed to great passing/shooting/beating the offside trap?

Of course you need a player or two that can do it, but let us not go over the top by talking about 4/5.

Good dribblers who are skillfull on the ball can really unsettle the defence. Real didn't score by going through our players, but we had to double-team to try to win the ball in midfield. That left Ronaldo one on one with our defender. Keane, Butt, Beckham or even Veron does not have the ability to go pass players like Figo, Zidane or even Viera. Not counting the likes of Nevilles and Brown. It can be more effective to pass but to have the added ability to go pass players is just as important. May be we need some of these complete players to compete in Europe. Attacking midfielders, defensive midfielders, full backs or even strikers who are very talented but are also very specialized in their roles are not as useful as players who has multiple skills. Especially in todays football when players switch positions all the time. Viera and Gerard are some of the best midfielders because they are good at tackling, winning balls, passing, and going pass players. I wish I can say the same about some of our midfielders but that is not the case (Keano a few years back was awesome, but he is now taking a more defensive role). I hope we will get some players who has the all round ability to upgrade our midfield this summer. We may be the best in England, but we deserve to be the best in Europe. Obviously we are not, having been outplayed by Real. With some 20+ million to spend this summer, we can really cath up with Real. Anyway, I trust Fergie, he usually has the eye to spot the talents that we need.

Passing game wins matches but dribbling skills are also important.Playmaker and the withdrawn-striker/linkman must develop the ability to hold the ball. They should be able possess the ball, tease the defenders(if necessary)and then deliver the killer pass. When Zidane dribbles,he changes directions a lot, often tying the defender in knots. He knows, how to change directions effectively,as well as to change speeds.Players like Giggs and Fat Ronnie rely on tremendous acceleration to power past defenders. When they dribble they keep the ball moving, and uses alot of small, quick touches to accelerate.

Did anybody watch RuiCosta's performance against RealMadrid in the first leg?Thats how our midfielders should play.

United is a passing team, thats our strength. But we are short of players that can best their man. Not that it should be a strategy but it is useful to have it as a threat, another weapon. You can sense it in the Madrid team when they are in possesion, its a threat that defenders have to be aware of. Also these types of players usually great at keeping possesion.

true if the defender is aware that his opponent can quite easily burst past him at any point, the def will always be on the back foot to start off with. its a valuable weapon to have. :)

I think Baro's and Diouf are not much more handsome than Ronaldinho though. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Kewell or/and duff are the more suitable choice, and these two names have been mentioning here a thousand times in recent weeks.

Perhaps Utd will deploy a 3 prong attack of Chadwick, Ronaldinho & Recoba - they'll really frighten the daylights out of opponents! :)

You are right. We need a minimum of four players who can carry the ball.
