How did Fortune play tonight?

Better than Phil does, but thats not difficult. Improvement over Maccabi I would say, mainly in terms of his desire and tenacity - but he had his work cut out with Veron alongside him.

in answer to the topic question...he tried hard but didnt really do to much. I got the impression he was meant to be the defensive one of the midfield.

Always the case, Scholes is the complete midfielder. Fortune was not as good as Butt though.

the whole midfield moved around except, Fortune..so he was deffo in there as a 'hold' player, he did ok..but nothing special.

I'm okay if he didn't do anything special, as long as he get the job done.
btw isn't that the position he played for South Africa?

I always thought he would be a better holding midfielder than he would be a LW. He doesn't seem to have the dribbling ability, and he is one aggressive player to say the least.

IMO we need someone really exceptional to play in CM, fortune is good, but isn't world class so best he can be is a good substitute.

He is basically also a LM in South Africa, but he was given much more freedom to find space himself. So far we haven't seen his best yet in United. He probably need to be given a run of games. Hope Fergie will continue to start with him instead of Phillip in the next league match.

that's a definite possibility considering a commendable display against Leverkusen.. i think SAF will also continue to keep Gaz out of the next game.. pity though.. veron didn't show his worth against shitty but was still given another chance to prove himself against Leverkusen - which he quite superbly TBH..

That's nothing new for us. Veron can perform very well in Europe but is shit in EPL, most of us already know that.

Leverkusen have some nice ball players in the middle of the park, but lack bite; therefore it wasnt the sternest test for Seba and Fortune.

I've disapointed by Fortune when he's come on as sub in recent games. He hasnt looked fired up to battle for a place IMO. Last night however, he aquited himself well and used the ball well.
 
I thought he did OK, closed down when necessary, got some tackles in, generally used the ball well & once or twice got forward linking with Giggs & Micky on the left; nothing special though.

Pretty well summed up. I'm not sure, other than for business reasons vis a vis SA, why Fergie's so excited about offering him a new longish term contract. He doesn't seem quite up to what is, or at least what should be, expected of a United player.
