 If you were a fan before 1993, you would know the value of the FA cup. Some of my best United memories were in the FA cup...so if tomorrows match doesn't get you too excited, F*** off.

harsh, but i agree. There's still magic in the cup for me. I confess every year i think ' we sholdnt worry to much about the cup this year' but as match day draws closer the magic of the cup never fails to amaze me and i get involved omce more. Tommrow is a big game for both clubs, at the end of the day, the f.a cup is a trophey and one with alot of history, and prize money, so of course we should have a go at it. COMON UNITED

The FA Cup will always be FA Cup. I don't agree that the spirit of the team is not to win it any more. Even the Worthington Cup, in the days when we would play fringe players, it was not so much a lack of seriousness as it was thought that it would provide a platform for youngsters to play senior games and take responsibility in something that would not be 'life threatening' in the case of a defeat. This is because our league performance could always be predictably assessed, which would always ensure us, thereby, a Champions League spot.

I think we never took any game lightly. Experimenting as in the Worthington Cup is not something light, it has got to do with throwing babies into the water and making them learn how to swim with the sharks. The experience is worthwhile and not worthless.

What has happened this year is that the experimentation has been done a lot more tactfully than in the previous years; something which has seen our chances still alive on four fronts. And I fully trust that we are starting our FA Cup campaign with the full determination to win it. There may be subtle changes made in team composition, if the chance would be there to allow it as when we play a team out of form or from the lower divisions. But that should not be construed as lack of interest. Far from it, it is a judicious management of resources as per requirements. You don't want to drop an atomic bomb to annihilate your enemy all the time if that enemy is only one guy and a simple karate chop would do the trick. ;)

So, my thought is that the FA Cup, as much as the Worthington Cup and the EPL AND the Champions League will all be given the deserved seriousness.

Roxy babe I was there in `63.....but our ambitions have moved on a bit ....just ask Keano

...when we win tomorrow , yeah nice , but its the next league game and champoins league that gets my adrenalin going now ...ok so if we get to the semi`s then fine , but the days when our only consolation was the cup are long gone , the world has moved on ........and if you dont see that Roxy my old cocker you are a bit of a sentimental fool ...

Typical of so many of you spoilt Mancs. All the glory but none of the romance of the game.
Really...how many of you would support Man Utd if they failed to qualify for the CL and not win the title for the next 10 years !!
The FA Cup is a wonderful competition. It needs to be continually nurtured by the biggest in the land...which includes you lot.You really don't know what you have got until you lose it.The day out in Cardiff last year and all that goes with it,the giant killing ...and most of all ,in this mercenary world, the knowledge that the competition won't be slanted by bogus 'seedings' (a la Champions' league,to protect the rich and fat football clubs)so that it is a truly knock out competition. Why will we watch Man Utd v Portsmouth???...Because,if you lose....you're out!!That's the beauty of the Cup.It's just a shame some of you guys have forgotten what the game's about !!

Absolutely not true, Gillespie, that we don't care about the FA Cup. I am speaking, here, I am sure for most of the Manchester United supporters on this forum by saying that the FA Cup is something we hold absolutely dear; it is a priceless competition. And we are not relaxing about it, at all. Take that for granted.

Gillespie, you know we´ve had the highest average attendance in the country for 40 years, don´t you? Obviously you don´t.

Wothout winning the FA cup in 1990 we would never had the chance to be the first club to win in Europe since the Dippers got us all banned.

The FA Cup is important, is the premier domestic knockout competition in world football.
We were the first team to do the Treble so why not be the first to do the quadruple (gillespie - thats 4 in 1 season, not in 5 seasons)

Fans like you are the reason why other fans hate us. Supporting Man Utd doesnt means only supporting them in big games in the league or CL.
what if we were to take a fall and fail to qualify for CL and challenge in the league on a consistent basis??
Would u stop supporting Man Utd then??

NO CUP is WORTHLESS to a Man United supporter!

<img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" />

This year we WANT all FOUR CUPS!
We are good enough......we are the BEST :D

The FA Cup saved Alex Fergusons arse in 1990 so basically set us on our way to domination.
It's like every normal English kids first dream to play in an FA Cup Final.
As someone said earlier, some of the best memories are in the FA Cup.
Some of mine are:
Giggs goal at Villa Park
Sparky scoring with the last kick
Givin Chelsea a good kickin in the 94 final
Beating Liverpool in 96
Beating Liverpool with two late late goals in 99
and so on.

So yes, i'd badly like us to win the FA Cup.

As someone born a Red, son of a red and grandson to a red, with a faint recollection of the events of '58 and a more vivid the memory of the '63 cup final (watchin' on telly in black & white mind ;) ), I see nowt wrong with a little sentiment!

Europe was important then, as it is now . . . and to a large extent the importance of it (in England anyway)was due to one (Sir) Matt Busby and a certain young team team called "United"

Our FA cup victory in '63 was major step towards greatness for us and laid the groundwork for '68.

I don't think we should ever lose sight of the value of the most famous and prestigious club knock-out tournament in the world and we should do whatever it takes to win it every year!

PS

"There's only one United!"

didnt look to me as if Fergie , despite his words , was all that interested either wih a second half midfield of ..Becks , Nevill , Richardson and Stewart ...as the man on the radio said more a wqorthington lineup that ...

Of course I want to see United win every game too but todays priorities have to mean that the Cup is a long way behind The CL and Premership in terms of importance .....nice to win but give me one of the others please first . The Cl with its league format has reduced the cups status to a bit of an also ran , like in much of the rest of europe ...sad maybe , but a fact

keane was injured! and he brought scholes on when portsmouth started to get into it so dont talk crap, if u saw fergie at villa park last year you would see he wants the fa cup.

so why wasnt Scholes and Veron Ole etc available today from the start ???/

it may have skipped past u but we just played four games in a very short time and we have another game on tuesday, thats what a squad is all about.

do u think neville deserves to be sat on the bench for the rest of the season after the performances he put in?

do u think youth will come through if u dont put your trust in them and actually give them a game?

with that midfield that u dont seem to like the fair score at half time would have been about 5-1 or even 5-0 seen as they only had one shot in the first half.

We were playing Pompey, the midfield we had today was more than capable of beating them. It's called squad rotation, we are in four competitions you know, you can't play the first 11 for every game of the year.

Tin Cup it is...

You should know, you've won 10 of them

TRM.

proves my point really about Fergies real ambitions ...puts probably his weakest team out today, weans his youngsters on the cup , ...third maybe fourth priority even . Thats realism ,te modern age .....there was a time when we werent ever going do do it in the League that we old timers looked for a cup run to warm our cockles in the cold winter months ....you mostly seem like a bunch of old codgers all thats lacking is a nostalgia for a cup of hot bovril at half time .......we are now cappuchino and latte people . leave the cup to the occasional conference no hopers ..the postman , the butcher , the painter and decorator and Motsons old sheepskin coat

There is a difference between caring and squad rotation. It is always a gamble to rest players but if we are to "care" about all of the competitions that we are still in Fergie must gamble or we don't stand a chance of winning multiple trophies.

Exactly right Wibble; The Gaffer is paid big money to take calculated risks . . . "gambles" if you like. Football has changed a great deal since the 50's and to win "everything" (EPL, CL & FA Cup)in this new era is a huge challenge.
Depth in the squad is a key ingredient but having players sit on the bench every game serves no purpose, they need to be "blooded" whenever the opportunity arises. The game against Pompey was just that. A very strong United squad won the game . . . as required . . . a couple of "fringe" players gained fantastic experience.
If we'd played the gooners you'd have seen a different starting line-up, it's that simple!
Now bring on the hammers, and let's "nail 'em"! ;)
