Steven King is always good. Plus he's got a shitload of books to get hooked on.
The Exorcist novel that inspired the movie is pretty spooky.
James Herbert-The Rats, The Fog
Also The Picture of Dorian Gray-Oscar Wildes only novel, I believe.

I thought James Herberts' "The Dark" was frightening but compulsive reading.

Used to like R.L Stine's when I was a kid. Got Stephen King's The Dark Half and some John Saul's few months back, don't have the time to read it yet though.
Darren Shan books are meant to be pretty decent, but are usually found in teenage fiction parts of a book stores
His son's work is better, except that he's only got 2 books out.
Joe Hill - check out Heart Shaped Box. I found it creepy but hilarious.
