Horrific Indy car 15 car pile up

In fact feck twitter, its a sick rumour. Why would people do that.

Just seen all the rubbish posted on twitter, sick people pretending Ashleyjudd has posted about him dying, latest news on sky sports 4, no news yet but Danica Patrick said he might be ok

I can't believe they are even considering continuing the race, you'd expect a black flag straight away after the magnitude of the accident

Wheldon may have been driving too hard. He has only had one or two rides this season, including this one: no regular employer: and there was a $5 million bonus to be had. FRom what I read, his was the car that touched off the accident. I hope his injuries are not major.

By the look on Kanaan's face I don't think its good news.

There's a video on YouTube from on board will powers car flying through the air, insane and shocking

Horrible crash and the body language on the ground doesn't look, fingers crossed Wheldon is ok.

feck, that's horrible, I had a really bad feeling after the impact.

R.I.P.

Wow.

Condolences to Dan's family. Very talented young man. Never been an Indy car fan but I followed his career a little bit. Always felt he was unlucky not to get a chance in F1.

Too young to go Dan.

It still amazes me that these cars are allowed to run at such speeds on oval tracks. Nascar can get away with it because their mid corner speed isn't as high and their are closed wheel, but due to the massive levels of downforce, these guys still sit on 300km within meters from one another.
Too many times drivers are lucky to not die in this series.

RIP Dan! :(

Shocking crash. Weldon lived in the Bay area, lots of good stuff about him on the local news.

RIP

Not a bad way to die for him but awful for his family that had to watch that. For the driver its no real difference to the other 32,000 road deaths each year in the US.

Exactly!

Definitely a dangerous sport but it's worth remembering that this was the first IndyCar fatality since 2006.

Because the very nature of this particular spectacle means that something like this will inevitably happen.

I really don't understand where this is going. How is this any less dangerous than going 160mph and being expected to slow down to 30mph to make a sharp turn (Ayrton Senna). Auto racing in an of itself is an extremely dangerous sport. I was a huge Dale Earnhardt fan and almost gave up the sport completely when he passed away. It made no sense to follow a sport where your hero's died. But it can happen in any sport. How many football players have died of heart attacks on the pitch?

They should really be running restrictor plates on this 1.5 mi ovals especially with these cars. Nascar brought in restrictor plates for Taladega and Daytona. It should be the same for these guys here but for some reason they won't.

For track racing, 1 death in each series should be too many in the past 10 years. After the death of Earndhart, Nascar did something about it and there hasn't been a death in the premier Nascar Sprint cup, nationwide or craftsman truck series in 10 years.

There's been 3 in IRL in that time frame.

I went to the Richmond race about 7 years ago and was stunned at how fast those cars go around a very short track (was used to watching the Cup cars). I agree, they need to do something to slow the cars down, hell they are lucky no spectators were killed yesterday.

Just heard these cars are 9 year old technology and due for a refresh next year. Far too long. There have been amazing safety improvements in F1 (mainly slowing but others too).

RIP.

This is true they have a new safer concept for 2012 and the saddening thing is Dan Wheldon was the lead test driver for the project.
