are you really happy that Man Utd are lying 4th in the PL, even though they cruised through to the 2nd stage of the CL???

I've heard a lot of fans hitting back at Scousers/Gooners by saying 'at least we got though to the 2nd round easily' but are you really contented by that? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Of course not, doubt anyone is.

However, seeing the Arse and Pool struggle reminds us that a successful EPL side does not necessarily cut it in Europe and that they are certainly "beatable".

Some of us start warming to the thought that if all the crap we have gone through in the last year or so means we are more competitive in Europe then in the long run (as we also go back to our best in the EPL) it might be worth it.

It's too early to say whether it's just a figment of our imagination but we certainly look better prepared to control the game at European level.

It's hard to win everything, and I must say that the priority for Ferguson and the players seems to be the Champions League. A lot of League performance is sacrificed for it, justifiably I think.

I don't particularly care what Liverpool and Arsenal think of us, as they are just Liverpool and Arsenal. I would really like to know what Real Madrid think of us. And I suspect I wouldn't like the answer. We need to stamp our class on Europe. It seems that this will come at the expense of League success, but so be it.

Although new to all of this, it's a matter of priorities. Would you rather win the CL or the Premiership? Man Utd has shown it is capable of winning both as well as others. It's still relatively early in the Premiership to count them out by an means.

league should always be the priority. fergie has stated so in the past and i hope he can instill some more fire for it in the team

No matter what happens Arsenal, ManUnited, and Pool should finish in the top 4 in the Premiership and get CL spots next year anyway. If one side wishes to concentrate more on the CL this year, more power to them. Might be hard to stay sufficiently healthy to take a double, let alone a treble with the number of fixtures on the schedule.

I think he said so before he won it so many times. Kings of England or Kings of Europe? I know which one I want. Our European tradition is a proud one, and we've got to maintain it. Recent transfer deals show that Ferguson wants that second European Cup badly.

English Premier League...............?

I think the PL should be first and foremost on all the players and fans minds. I don't like or agree with teams who finish third in their league lifting the European Cup. Just doesn't seem right.

Why? If Barca played in the PL, they would finish in the top 3. So would Valencia. That Real Madrid would do so goes without saying. These are teams that are perhaps better than any in the PL. By the quarter finals, any team still left in it can lift the cup deservedly.

It's not fair to exclude the likes of Barca and Inter because they finish second in their league. They have just as much, perhaps even more right to the European Cup than say Arsenal.

In terms of the PL we want to win it - but have to be aware that there is no divinr right to do this each year. What we are entitled to expect is that we are one of the teams that will push the eventual champions all the way to the wire - I can take us not winning but if we lost to Pool and the Arse in Dec and were effectively playing for a CL spot from then on that would be depressing.

If I had to choose to win the League or the European cup THIS YEAR I would take Europe - Fergie needs to win it more than once - and we have enough league titles to last- then again its a lot less painful watching Barca or Real lift the EC than one of our hated rivals crowned PL champions.

It's just my opinion. If you don't win your league, how can you claim to be the best in Europe? Call it / me old fashioned but I like the old format with only Champions of each league in the European Cup. Say Oxford Univ. goes on and wins the FA Cup, does that mean they are one of the best sides in England? No, the best club in the tournament, maybe. The European Cup is suppose to determine the best club in Europe. How can you be the best if you finish third in your league.?

So would you sooner the teams eligible for the Champions league be the teams that won their domestic leagues?

You do realise that if that format still existed, our Premier league would probably be on its way down the pan is most of the top clubs wanted to breakaway to form a Euro super league, obviously for the money, im afraid we cant have our cake and eat it mate.

I see your point, but the European Cup adjusts for the difference in the standard of football between countries. Is Lens better than Barca? Probably not. Yet if Lens win the Championnat and Barca finish second in the Liga, Lens qualify and Barca don't.

I actually prefer the 2 group stage format because it's more like a league and that makes the competition better in determining the best club in Europe. The knock out stages are there for the excitement, but the group stages help winnow out the clubs that don't have the staying power.

Think of finishing 3rd and qualifying as saying "we think you could cut it in Europe, but you have to prove in in qualifying and in the group stages". Once you reach the quarters, everyone has an even chance. Then you'll get to see who's best.

I think that Man Utd should be concentrating on the Premier league, Europe is nice but its only a bonus to win it. Besides we shouldnt be in the champions league if we arent champions!

As for cruising into stage two:

Maccabi Haifa - Seriously how hard of a team are they to play and we STILL lost!

Olympiakos - An average team that most decent teams should beat.

Leverkusen - A mere shadow of their former self, if we didnt beat them in this state we dont deserve to be playing in the CL!

It seems to me that all that counts is money...

Manchester United will definitely win the premiership. All our first team players will be back from injury in December and we'll see who'll be able to stop us.

Ask Real. I think the main reason everyone gets so worked up about winning the League is that whoever else wins it you will hate them.

If AEK Athens won the CL you wouldn't give a toss, it's very fine not winning it since you know Arse and Poo won't either.

Put it this way, would you rather:

-Pool wins the CL and we win the league
-We win the CL and Pool wins the league

Would you rather say you:

-consistently dominated a tournament packed with top notch teams playing their best football

or

-consistently accumulated points over a year playing crappy run-of-the-mill teams who have very negative tactics and are more concerned about relegation than winning?

Watch out, I'm not the sort who goes on about "the CL is our rightful place to be", "we belong with the greatest". Stuff that, I just think it is a much more exciting and entertaining tournament and I'd rather win that one then.
