I know there's a lot of talk about getting rid of some of our players, but I thought I'd have a look at our homegrown contingent:

Jones
Maguire
Rashford
Heaton
Shaw
Wan-Bissaka
McTominay
Sancho
Garner
Tuanzabe
Kovar
Chong
Williams

Assuming you have to pick the full 8 home-grown contingent, who would you pick as your first choice 8 of the above? It doesn't look like we're after any home-grown talent in our purchases at the moment so this is something that could end up being important by the end of the transfer window.

Also, do let me know if I'm forgetting anyone! Not including U-21 players - only players born before 1st Jan 2001.

Maguire - Garner (providing he isn’t sold). Rest are garbage.

Is it not less a case of having to pick 8 homegrown players and more a case of only being allowed 17 non homegrown players and therefore not being able to register a full squad of 25? I think a lot of our fans forget that fact when they talk about replacing all our homegrown players though.

That's another way of wording it, yep. Currently we have:

Foreign: DDG, Lindelof, Ronaldo, Martial, Fred, Fernandes, Varane, Dalot, VDB, Malacia, Martinez, Eriksen, Casemiro, Bailly

Cut out Bailly and we have 13 foreign players, and are looking to buy a number of other players - supposedly up to four more with no homegrown talent being frequently mentioned. With that in mind, I think it's safe to say we'll be using our current contingent of HG players to make up the rest of the squad. For me, that would mean:

Home-grown: Shaw, Maguire, Rashford, Wan-Bissaka, McTominay, Sancho, Heaton
Plus one of Jones, Garner, Tuanzabe, Kovar, Chong, Williams. The rest of these guys will have to hope we don't sign four foreign players so there are more spots, or otherwise have to be loaned out or sold if they want to have even an opportunity to play in a league at all. It wouldn't surprise me if Jones ended up falling into the "not even registered" category at this rate, although admittedly he is the only one of these players to not have rumours in the news about them leaving in one way or another.

Home grown players must play for United for three years before they turn 21.

Maguire, Jones, Shaw, Wan-Bissaka and Sancho are not homegrown.
Premier League rules state a player is homegrown if they have played for any FA-affiliated club, not just that club in particular.

I believe there is/was a club-specific rule somewhere at some point (or maybe I'm misremembering) but at the moment the PL doesn't care about the specific club, just that it's part of the English football ladder.

In order they're worth keeping:

1.Sancho - worth keeping

2. Shaw - as a 2nd choice who may have a good 2 month spell every season.

3. Rashford - would offload for any half decent fee but part of the squad due to lack of alternatives
= Garner - might become a decent player
= Heaton - doesn't matter
= Tuanzebe - is quicker than Maguire
= Jones - is quicker than Maguire

4. Williams - sell asap
= Wan-Bissaka - sell asap
= McTominay - sell asap
= Maguire - sell asap
= Chong - sell asap

No opinion on Kovar, so I'll keep him as the 8th cos why not.

I'm hoping some of young foreign lads will eventually qualify as homegrown? Likes of Hannibal, Diallo, Garnacho, Fernandez? Cos it looks pretty bleak if not.

Damn it's not looking great is it. Supposedly we're looking at Anthony, RB, CM and GK which would take us to our limit of 17. If Ronaldo left we'd need a striker on top but it would be 1 out 1 in so we'd be fine just about.

The brutal part is no one on here rates any of our homegrown players with the exception of maybe Sancho (who's also beginning to wear everyone's patience thin). So replacing them in the coming transfer windows would be priority but completely unrealistic. The idea of Rashford leaving for PSG is also a non-starter as he'd need a replacement who would probably be foreign.

If we were looking at shipping out any of them foreign players in your list this window, VDB was already kind of redundant the moment we signed Eriksen, but if we get a new CM alongside Casemiro then VDB's presence becomes completely pointless.

We need to start producing more genuine first team quality players from our academy.

If that's the list and we had to keep 8 and let the others go then I'd say;

Jones
Maguire
Rashford
Heaton
Shaw

Wan-Bissaka
McTominay
Sancho
Garner
Tuanzabe
Kovar

Chong
Williams

If we could get offers we couldn't refuse for Maguire, Rashford, Shaw then I'd be content the keep the likes of McTominay, Williams, Wan-Bissaka until we found replacements to ensure we have a full quota. I think it's probably more likely we sell the three latter players before the former though, so ultimately we need to keep an eye on homegrown talent.

Elanga, Mengi, Shoretire qualify already despite still being listed as U-21s (so can play without being in the squad of 25), they were listed as homegrown U-21s in last season's squad.

Garnacho, Iqbal, Emeran, Hansen-Aarøen, Jurado, Fernández, Hannibal will all qualify as home-grown despite being foreign players.

Diallo I'm not so sure about - he joined us in Jan 2021, and at that point he was age 18 - but I think they need a full three years to qualify, which would mean it's not possible as he wasn't playing for an FA team as of his 18th birthday. I might have that wrong, though.
