I’m trying to think if there is a better home grown 11 currently playing in the league system.
How would this team do compared to other home grown teams….

Henderson,

Williams,
Evans,
McTominay,
Fernandez

Pogba,
Perriera,
Brownhill

Elanga
Rashford
Garnacho

We haven’t had any great defenders come through recently however.

I don't know enough of their players but I would assume Chelsea probably has a fairly good one of these? They always seem to ship out a bunch of players that end up doing well elsewhere and were in the chelsea academy at some point

I would include Gomes in the midfield who is doing well for Lille.

Chelsea would have

Cumming

Reece James
Lamptey
Tomori
Christensen or Ake

Loftus Cheek
Gilmour
Gallagher

Mount
Abraham
CHO

Then there are former Chelsea youth who left around age 14-16 like Rice, and Musiala.

Chelsea have a really good young(ish) keeper called Jamie Cumming. He came to MK Dons on loan for 2 years, was head and shoulders the best keeper in the league. Interestingly he has Europa League medal as he was on the bench in the final for them in 2019.

You could put Hudson-Odoi in that front 3. Disappointing to see his career tail off a bit, he was electric the first couple of years as a senior player.

That back four is horrible. Was going to mention this in my ETH adversity thread. Hard to think of any other big club who wouldn't have at least one decent centre-back capable of stepping up in an injury crisis like we just had. Likewise at left back it's not as though Malacia or Shaw are out for the season. To add to his list of woes, he's joined at an all time low in terms of homegrown defensive talent.

Arsenal just had to play fecking Rob Holding in most games during their title challenge run in because they had one injury. God knows who they'd have been wheeling out with an injury list likes ours.

Anyway Keane as CB, Garner instead of Brownhill.

Better to play Keane as CB and McTominay as CM.

McNeil, Jack Harrison also were part of ManUtd academy at some point, then you have Gomes, Garner, Welbeck too.

Henderson
Williams
Evans
Keane
Fernandez

Pogba
McTominay
Pereira

Garnacho
Welbeck
Rashford

Not just defensive talent but striking talent as well. It was staggering to me that there wasn't someone in the youth teams we could have tried last season who might have been able to contribute more than Wout.

Yes. Should have mentioned that too. I found that nuts as well. Just a really lean few years in terms of homegrown players. Which is reflected in the 11 year gap between Youth Cup wins and our U21s being relegated. There’s basically nobody of note between Rashford’s age and Garnacho’s. Shite state of affairs for a club as big as United, with such a good record of youth development.

Keane instead of McT in defence.
McT in midfield instead of Brownhill

You also have Garner, Gomes, McNeill, Welbeck, Januzaj, King, Norwood, Fosu Mensah, Johnstone, Harrison,

What about that old fella who likes shouting SSSSIIIIUUUUUUUUU a lot.

How about this team?
Ddg
Telles Lindelof Bailly Dalot
Fred Fellaini Schneiderlin
Sanchez Weghorst Di Maria

Now that is a full international first 11 with not a single british player (bought or home grown) that we paid a large amount of money for in the last 10 years (except Weghorst) that sounds maybe better but is worse than the one you mentioned. Every single one of this guys has been a flop except DDG. Dalot is doing ok I guess. The point isnt in home grown or international mercenary its about players being nsync with each other and that isnt happening for quite a while now.

It wasnt 1 injury but rather 2. Saliba and Tomiyasu, Holding was 4th choice CB, White would have replaced Saliba with Tomiyasu taking up RB, but he was also out for the season so Arteta opted to keep White at RB and bring Holding in at CB because there was no 3rd RB.

I mean there is an obvious one in there and then plenty of good premier league players.

Like wtf is going on here? Are we just doing some kind of BBC deleting Saville out of existence thing here or something!?

Bench;

Hall
Livramento
Nketiah

Could be a top 6 team.

You could quite easily build a respectable Premier League team from Chelsea academy players. Ake, Gilmour and Solanke would all be eligible as well, it's only really missing a decent goalkeeper.

The problems Chelsea have had on the pitch in the last couple of years are almost impressive with a foundation like that and all the money that's been spent. United aren't really any better for that so I'm not trying to be condescending, I'm just amazed by some of the football decisions that have been made at some of the top clubs in the country.

You really have produced some great players.

Odd that so few are still at the club given all the money spent though. I think the club clearly has a good eye for talent and development to a point but the integration and planning for the first team is especially weak.

I'd doubt we'll see anything close to Barcelona's 11 from La Masia in 2012 anytime soon.

Valdés
Montoya, Piqué, Puyol, Alba
Busquets, Xavi, Fabregas
Pedro, Messi, Tello

They won a league game 4-0 with an academy XI, while missing freaking Andrès Iniesta.

Yeah I tried to limit it to players who spent more than 3 years in our academy, so Ake and Gilmour didn't count for me as they came through another club's academy until they were 15 or 16. I did take liberties with Maatsen though, as he's effectively in the same boat as Ake and Gilmour.

Yep totally agree. When we had the transfer ban in 2020, we kinda lucked into Lampard and the emergence of Tomori, Tammy, Mount and James at the same time. It's been kind of a mess since then. We always seem to have multiple academy players in the lineup but the only constant throughout appears to be James (should have been Mount too but alas, didn't work out). Everyone else has been in and out. Hopefully we can add Colwill to the list of first team mainstays and we have more coming through after him, so the conveyor belt of talent feels never ending.

Tuanzebe at CB? Garner in CM over Brownhill? Or Lingard? Hannibal and Diallo in with a shout as squad depth/bench.
