I thought you mentioned that you would only want him to come to OT if another experienced central defender was bought as well. Surely you see some quality in him.

How did he get demoted to "not utd quality"?

But I agree with you, Hofland has not been impressive this season (at least from the Euro and int'l games of him that I have watched), don't know about his form for the Dutch league though.

I still think that next to a big, top class CB he wouldn't be that bad I just don't think we should spend 15 million quid or so on someone whose not that outstanding. If we do sign a big, top class CB and have the chance to sign Hofland for up to 10 million quid then I'd go for it tho.

So who's your top choice (realistically for us) for a centre-half?

Ayala is my pick.

And that's because samuel and tudor will never leave their respective clubs to join us.

I'm a bit doubtful about Thuram joining us considering the PLC wouldn't release the cash for him last summer - sumthin' to do with age vs cost and all that nonsense.

Don't see the PLC changing their minds on this.

Looking at the current situation ... I'd say Ayala too ... That's after I watched PSV vs Feyenord ... Hofland has really dissapoint me !! ... not that commanding as I hope he will be ... I at first thought of Johnsen/Neville - Hofland partnership should be good enough but not now ... Too mistake prone IMO ... we can't afford have that especially with our normally aggressive play ..

Ayala or Tudor as the current situation go ...

From what I've seen of him this season, hes' been ok, but not outstanding. He has had many disruptions to his season through injury, so thats a factor. The interest in Hofland seems to be based more on his first season for PSV and his breaking into the dutch team, on performances this season he would not be top of my list.

Thuham, Desaily, Tudor, this kind of player; imposing and dominant, with technique.

we should just get huge 7 foot bodybuilder types and that'll scare the shit out of opposing attackers

;)

now thats imposing and dominant...not so sure about technique though :)

I dont. he's been out injured most of the time since the new year. Once he gets a few games under his belt he'll retain his old form.

When you say not United quality???

Not the quality of player you'd like to see brought in?

Or not of the same dizzy heights as the likes of Brown OG, Neville or Blanc?

;)

i agree, ive seen him many times in lil highlights on eurosport and when hes played for holland. to me hes just very average with a big head. everytime he gets the ball, he always seems to just hit it long and not always meet the target. i saw mexes play on eurogoals live, when they showed an entire game from the french league live, and he looks much more compossed and had much better physical presense, he looked massive, but needs to stop bleaching his hair! people say he will b the next blanc, but i couldnt see that many simularities in style, blanc defends mostly on his feet, but mexes goes to ground alot, like nesta, but unlike most defenders, they do it effectively.

as for who manchester united actually buy, i hope its mexes or ayala. but i reckon we'll end end with hofland coz hes constantly being linked and united have never denied it.

Hofland a more DIRECT defender ... Mexes more "cultured" type ... that's the different between these 2 young starlets IMO ... But what Man Utd need for next season is a new Defence-partnership ... so we need to look at what we have had before deciding ...

Ok ... we have Johnsen ... but probably only for another season or so .. .and he still has consistent injury problem so we could probably count him out ...

Left with O'Shea and Brown ... both talented ... have the height and speed ... BUT ... lack of consistency and experience ... that's the WEAK LINK my friends ... so we need to look in this and then look at the candidates ... Ohhh .. not much experienced and quality defenders outside there ... Ayala looks pretty much an obvious choice now ... Tudor too probably ... Hofland and Mexes will be too young and inexperienced IMO .....

Stam and Blanc were/are United quality - the rest are adequate Premiership defenders imo.

Do you just think these things up or what ??

We didn't get Thuram because Juventus decided to pay Parma £23m for him, whereas we apparently rated him at around £15-16m. Easy as that. <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

It not what they see in him, its what they don't see in him thats important. He isn't United class, and never will be, I don't care how much he is hyped up. Chivu is the best defender in the Dutch league hands down. But, if we are looking for a CB, we have to look elsewhere, for Hofland (while decent) isn't the player we need.

To be honest I haven't been particularly blown away by Chivu's defending skills either. It seems that he's another young defender who is excellent going forward (powerful shot, good in the air, aggresive eye for goal), but with adequate to good defending skills. I would place Mexes in that same category as well, though I sense more long term potential with Mexes, than I do with Chivu. Tudor, Stam  , Thuram, Ayala etc all work for me.

I asked a PSV supporter on their official site how they rated Hofland and his perspective move to United:

The response:

Kevin is a great defender, will be the best dutch defender after a couple of years (he's still very young) but currently his performance is not that good to join Man Utd. That has a few reasons, including the way the whole team is playing. jhe biggest reason: a couple of head injuries. So I think it is better for him and for Man Utd to wait just one year longer before contracting him.

Thuram would make my day. Anyway, rumour has it he's not having the best of seasons.... Can someone verify that?

This just in. Thuram is not having the best of seasons. ;)

He doesn't like to play RB.

I read something last summer about Fergie making a statement that he thought the fee quoted was a bit high for Thuram vis-a-vis his age

It certainly was NOT made up

why do we need new centrebacks ?
we have brown and oshea at squad
i think that those guys can play
if they get time to play
what ??????????

Brown is inconsistent
O'Shea is too inexperienced

They are not first choice material

on "you're on sky sports" rodney marsh rated Hofland VERY VERY HIGHLY.... he sure as hell give a good impression of the guy

Read sometime back that Hofland will only opt for a move to United if he is guaranteed a starting place. Not sure if this is true, and there is a possibility that Thuram might be inclined to leave because he is not happy at Juve, mainly due to the fact that he is not able to play CB. It would be great if we could get him, both Brown and O'Shea would gain from playing with both Blanc and Thuram.

let Thuram go, he is getting on now and would still cost a fortune, more than Hofland. If he wanted to come to United he would have done it two/three seasons ago imo. Meanwhile, I feel his best position is RB, but then that wouldn't be a bad thing. Hofland looks good, but I would only feel comfortable if a more experianced defender came in; in shorter terms, if Hofland was our lone buy this close-season I would be disappointed. But he seems a good prospect, tho I haven't seen too much of him.

If Hofland is not reckend United quality, then what makes the Neville bro's so special?? Kevin is one of the best defenders in Holland! The quy has great potential, he is fast, strong and has great footballskills!! Do you think AF is blind or something?? United fans would be delighted if they saw Hofland playing for them! He would be a United favorit in a short time, trust me..........
