United's fixtures in the Hibernia Trophy:

Aug 16:
United- Stad Rennais,

Aug 17:
United- Linfield,
United- FAI Emerging talent,

Aug 18:
United-Leicester City

For player born 1999 and younger. 2 players born before 01.01.1999 and after the
01.09.1998 are permitted.

I'll definitely get to at least one day of this. Might try and do all three.

Wonder if many of the lads from the Premier Cup squad will be playing. I believe Makela and Thompson were born in 99, not sure if many others are young enough.

I think I'll be there all three days. I'll have to head straight there from work tonight so I'm hoping I get there for the full United Match. Hopefully the rain will stay away over the weekend.

We went 4-0 up in this but havent heard any updates since. Couldnt make it to this myself but hopefully will get to go to tomorrows games

Ah seriously, I only caught the 2nd half and there were no goals while I was there. United players all seemed very comfortable on the ball but it was a scrappy 2nd half and the ref didn't let things flow as he might have.

I'd say I missed the best football that was played and by the time I started watching a number of subs had been made, however a few players caught my eye. Both Centre backs were pretty solid and number 5 especially was very comfortable with the ball at his feet, taking it out of defence on a number of occasions to start an attacking move. Number 9 also had a bit of a presence up front and number 8 had some very tidy touches but his final ball let him down a couple of times.

Some of the players who came on were very small, particularly number 17 and number 14. Both gave a good account of themselves though and I thought number 14 was actually quite impressive in the middle of the field.

The main thing I took from it was how comfortable the lads were with the ball at their feet, most of them displayed really nice close control and touches. It was the decision making and execution of passes that stopped them from adding to the scoreline while I was there.

I'm looking forward to seeing their two full games tomorrow and seeing the first choice team out there.

Cheers for that.

United lost 2-1 against Linfield, good competitive game could have gone either way. Gomes is a serious talent. Was a class above!

lost 2-1 number 6 witur goalnd had a very good game. gomes was the best player on and drew a few gasps from the crowd. linfields winner was from a very dodgy looking penalty that even the linfield parents were laughing about. the players who stood out for me were 4 5 6 8 and 10

Agree very impressed with 6 and 5 as well. 4 was decent although I thought he was caught out a few times and is a bit small for the position at the moment. 8 was similar to yesterday, good physical presence and some nice touches and short passing, but a few wayward passes when he tried a longer pass or a through ball.

Gomes is best player I've seen here so far by a mile though. When he knocked the ball past one player, rouletted past another and then looked up and played a lovely pass down the right wing I couldn't believe I was watching a 13 year old.

FAI beating Stade 5-0 atm so the French are obviously very weak. I'll be interested to see how United get on against Leicester and the FAI who've looked decent from what I've seen.

Linfield just lost 2-1 against Leicester to a very late goal. I think Linfield had full points from their previous 2 games so a draw in that game would likely have put them into the final as their opponents tomorrow, Stade, have been whiping boys so far. If United can win their 2 remaining games that would likely put 3 teams on 9 points so it would go down to goal difference as far as I know.

United lost 1-0 against a much bigger Ireland team. Again Gomes was the best player on the pitch at one stage he nutmegged one player and there was another player coming in from behind him so he dragged the ball backwards through his legs. He reminds me of Andreas Pereira in some of his movement but with a better burst of pace. I managed to get a hold of the squad list and Gomes isnt even 13 until the 31st of August. Was very impressed with the keeper Ben Pierce aswell looks like Joe Hart and not much smaller in height or build

Agree with everything here. United really struggled to get any passing game going against a much bigger and stronger FAI side. I haven't seen Makela play, but from what I've heard of him he's be just what this United team need. They lack an athlete to run behind the defence and be a bit more direct when attacking.

I loved the United coaches approach though. They treat it as a development tournament whereas other teams obviously take it much more seriously. I was behind the teams benches for the United game and the Celtic vs Villareal game before it. The Celtic game was a very firey affair and both sets of coaches were very vocal with the players and the ref.

The United staff on the other hand remained very quite and only shouted out to congratulate players for doing something well. When one sub was made the United player making way went jog straight to the bench, the United coach had him jog over to the player coming on and wish him luck. Just generally really impressed by how United handled themselves and the example the coached set.

They also made sure everyone got playing time. Despite being one nil down against a very big and strong FAI team, they made a couple of subs which left their 3 smallest players (6,14,17) on the field at the same time, with both 6 and 14 playing in midfield.

I've seen every team play now bar st. Josephs and I can safely say Gomes is the best player there. Considering he not even 13 yet that's astonishing.

Leicester beat United 3-0 in Uniteds final game of the tournament, Leicester went on to the final but I'm not sure how that finished. Despite the scoreline it was more of a contest than the FAI game. Once again Leicester were too big and strong for United who played a number of their smallest lads from the start. 6 and 14 played in midfield, 17 on the left and 16 on the right. They just lacked someone who could run in behind the defence or someone to hold up the ball in the final third. Like yesterday they insisted on building from the back with almost every goal-kick going short to the left-back. It's a good learning experience for them to play that way, but Leicester (like the FAI yesterday) knew it was coming every time and pressed them high up the park and made it difficult for United to get the ball beyond midfield.

The 'keeper made a few good saves again but probably should have saved the 3rd. I was impressed by number 2 at right-back, I thought he had good cameos in the games yesterday but that's the first time I've seen him from the start. 5 was also solid again but went off a half-time with a slight niggle. The middle two battled hard for the whole match which was good to see, but they were outmatched by Leicester in that area. Gomes once again flashed moment of brilliance but they struggled to get him the ball in dangerous positions. He really does have incredible ability to pick out a penetrative pass for a 12 year old, combined with his insane dribbling.

But I think little number 17 would be my pick for United's player of the game. Despite being the youngest United player in the squad and much smaller than his marker, he showed some really nice touches and moments of skill out on the left. He also tracked back really well and must have won the ball back 5+ times through sheer grit and determination.

Quick Overview:

Manchester United 5 Stade Rennais 0
Manchester United 1 Linfield 2
Manchester United 0 FAI Emerging Talent 1
Manchester United 0 Leicester City 3

We finished 4th in Group B and didn't make the play-off's...not surprising given the size and age of our squad as mentioned in posts above.

Leicester topped group but lost in final to Villarreal.
