Manchester United youngster Sam Hewson offered contract extension

By Football Spy 17/06/2009

Manchester United starlet Sam Hewson has been offered a one-year extension to his contract.

The 20-year-old midfielder was loaned out to Hereford for three months last season, where despite netting three goals in 10 appearances, he was unable halt their drop to League Two.

However his performances for the Bulls impressed Sir Alex Ferguson, who believes Hewson can seriously push for a first-team squad place next term and has moved to lengthen the youngster’s contract, which has just 12 months remaining.

i'm also a bit surprised... with all the CMs we've got in the reserves, i thought he would be sold this summer.

anyway, good luck!

A bit weird but well done. By all accounts he did do very well for Hereford until he got injured.

He is a decent player, but considering the talk of Gibson leaving. I'm a little surprised he has been given a new deal.

Good Luck to him though, we'll probably get a million for him in the near future.

He's probably given a new deal with the intention of giving Hewson HIS role he had the last year.

No I don't think he'll be promoted that quickly.

Presumably the thinking is that he could be a good championship player if not better and that he shouldn't be let go for nothing.

I don't think Hewson is any where near Gibson's level in all honesty. I think Gibson could be a good squad player, I see no better than the Reserves for Hewson.

Matty James, Petrucci and Possebon have more of a first team shout than Hewson for me.

I was a bit surprised with this, he was disappointing whenever I saw him for the reserves at the start of the year, however maybe he showed something in his loan spell that merited another year to see how he'll develop.

No, he isn't, but is there any other logic for the deal with Gibson on his way?

Hewson is a tidy player but unlike James, Petrucci or Possebon, can't see him knocking on the door of the first team.

There is no confirmation of Gibson leaving, it has only been press speculation so far. I'm assuming there will be a raft of loans meaning that we may need him for the reserves, or he may get another loan at a slightly higher level to see if he can step up. If he's succesful it would hike up any potential transfer fee (anyone thinking we'd get £1m for him at the moment is in dreamland) or force him to the fringes of the first team squad. We'll have to wait and see.

I can see Gibson going out on loan.. So Hewson may be given a run out off the bench or from the start in the CC depending on whether the other fringe players are injured..

The only reason I can think of is to make money off him. We have enough mifielders to cover the reserves in all honesty even if Gibson goes out on loan.

Drinkwater, James, Possebon and Petrucci. Hewson would be 5th choice for the reserves?

I reckon Hewson will go out on loan again. He did well last season before his injury, makes sense to tie him down a bit longer to see if he develops further. It's all presumably leading to a move away, but if it results in a more lucrative one for us and a more prestigious one for him then it's all good.

I don't think this is connected to Gibson's situation in the slightest.

No surprise. After showing some good early promise, he hasn't really progressed. Hope he finds a club in the lower leagues as he's already shown he can play at that level.

His name has cropped up on the Hereford forum but even fans there a unsure whether they want him. I for one would give him a chance though

Best of luck to him. Hope he manages to cut out a good career for himself.

hes another who never really kicked on or realised his early potential. Liked him alot in the youth team when he was captain (2005 or 2006 ?)

He was captain in 06/07 when Cathcart was in the first team squad and then out injured towards the end of the campaign (ended up being captain for the Youth Cup semis and final).

Do you live near Hereford then ole or were you just on the site to see what there thoughts on him were?

There's an article on him in the Prestwich Advertiser today.

He's at Altrincham and scored his first goal v Kettering recently. Apparently he went on trial to Bury in the summer, and a few other League clubs (not named) but it didn't work out.

"Sometimes you have to take a step down to help you move forward and ultimately I would like to play in the Football League again.

I expect there will be scouts at most of our games this season so I'll have a chance to impress one or two people.

Hopefully I can show everyone that I am still a good player"

hereford had him and brandy on loan when they were in league one
i used to read their message boards and they thought he was very good.. bit surprised he didnt get a better offer .. hope it works out for him
