This is like the argument that people shouting racist stuff to players aren't necessarily racist; they may just be shouting whatever they think will distract the player. That may be true, but they are still putting something racist into the world, thus contribute to its normalization, and apparently don't care enough not to. At that point, there's no actual functional difference with being a racist deep down.

That sounds more like you're wishing he isn't a fascist, as that would make your chain of comment in work and values end up with fascists at the top. I agree that that's a terrible idea, but wanting it to not be true has no bearing on Musk being one or not.

It could be your age? The only Trump fans I’ve ever met (friends of my wife’s cousin) are all much younger than me. I think it happened because they were in their teens when the alt right as a thing first happened and it seemed edgy and cool. This was before Trump first ran for election. Whereas back then it was barely even on the radar for old cnuts of our generation.
