Herr Musk | Fascist

The supermarket analogy doesn't really work because you'd starve to death if you couldn't buy food where everyone else buys food. To me the baffling bit is what sort of value Twitter can bring to anyone's life that couldn't be sacrificed once it's established that the guy who owns/runs the company is basically a nazi? Even more so now everyone keeps saying what a horrible place it has become to spend time on. What does starving to death look like in this context?
It looks like the richest man on the planet getting involved in the most powerful nation and conditioning everyone that Nazi salutes is actually okay because mental health or whatever works for the narrative.

X and the people on it are not my problem to solve.
I agree. In fact, I already told you that.

You are making the plattform relevant by being there. Whether you post, view or share. You are it's energy.
Yep. And this site has gone to shit (still good) ever since it became a second-hand twitter feed imo.

That's literally all some threads are now. Someone posting tweets.

And you are burying your head in the sand if you think just ignoring the problem will go away. You are it's Emu.
He's actually right. Complete disengagement of social media sites is precisely how they die (as with any traditional newspaper). That or people move elsewhere. Disengagement either way.

I have about 10friends there, including two who I first met on there and then I.R.L., and a few more I know very well online (also one woman who I asked out, who gave me the most drawn-out rejection of all time :/). None of them seem to be moving from there, even though most of us have bsky accounts.

Besides them, the algorithm works fine for me. If I do see a toxic post on there, it's either reposted by somebody else to highlight toxicity, or something I found in the replies to a high-engagement post. I can imagine it is a Nazi dump but my feed is mostly clear of that - youtube recommendations are much worse in that respect. And I do get some news, both from India, and from Gaza, that bluesky simply doesn't have.

e - I used to open bsky about once a week and every single time there seemed to be very long, serious, joke-free debates about whom to block, chains of blocks, how many blocks someone did (as an accomplishment). Just strange vibes.

Oh, we can't fight Nazis now?

He's actually wrong.

"social media" is pure propaganda. You ignore that, and you fail to learn from history.

I own 0 social medial accounts. But he's right. You should divest attention from that space (in terms of engagement) if you personally want to make a contribution. Up to yourself.

The first part of your comment is mental. I don't have a clue what you mean.

Is fighting Nazis having a conversation on/around the platform in question which you think is Nazi or supports them? Because that's fecking mental. The solution is easy. But convenient to keep an account at this or that shithole and also keep posting from it.

X/whatever, all use tracking cookies and so are present on this site (as with the rest of them) not just because people keep tagging them in (there is that, obviously, engagements) but because of beacons and all sorts of tracking reasons. However, it is membership, active, by which the stock of these companies (network capacity if you like) tends to fluctuate (that and how the sites monetize engagement of people). Solution? Delete your account and leave this thread, too, plus any others where X is being used. Not hard. If you're that committed to battling Nazis.

Fair enough. I’m conscious that a much easier retort for you would be asking me to justify eating meat! (I can’t’)

I don't really think there is much benefit in being on X to fight against Musk anymore. Perhaps at the start but now it's gone too far in one direction. Best to do it on less problematic platforms.

Honestly think it's like buying the sun on a daily basis because "someone has to check the lies they're spreading".

The best way to fight is to leave in droves

I’ve never been much of a twitter user but started using it more during the Indian elections and it’s slowly but surely turned into a complete RW cesspool of filth. Time to delete this bigoted vile app.

Today I learned that I tweeted more than I thought. Two tweets in 13 years.

Subtle flex to prove you're morally superior?

There is no morality involved, I have no intention to not use it. Now it's a bit strange that I post like a mad man on the caf but have absolutely no interest in doing it on Twitter and never had.

I was joking man. I am thinking about deleting my Twitter account. I probably use it more than anything so will be quite hard but I hate Musk so much.

I figured but I care about people being aware of my hypocrisy, it's an easier standard to uphold.

It's true, everyone knows that unless most of us are white, we will suddenly all die.

Wonder if Elmo knows Geert Wilders is secretly 50% Indonesian. The dyed hair is a pretty good disguise.

I always suspected that something was wrong with him.

I deleted my Twitter account a while ago now and my wife did a few weeks later. I miss it not at all. I'd also avoid any Musk related product even if I needed it.

Just stop with this autism bullshit. Autism isn’t an excuse for making a goddamn Nazi salute. And suggesting it might be, is incredibly insulting to autistic people.
My brother has Asperger’s, and I can confirm he has never performed a Nazi salute.

Different media. You can have long-form discussions here and short-form. Essayists thrive here and they don't exist on Twitter except a link to a different website or reading in embedded form is basically a degenerate form of argumentation (in media terms).

The traditional forum simply "beats" modern social media. They're less used today than 20 years ago, perhaps, but all taken into account, the old forum is superior in terms of debating.

That’s what I’m talking about. Automation wiped out most of the working class jobs. AI will do the same to the middle/upper class. Be interesting to see if that has more of an impact on the tech bros driving this revolution. Or will even the best educated turkeys still continue to vote for Christmas?
They will I fear. In the hope they will rise or be chosen.

This social structure existed in a similar shape since even before automation. If you pull the camera back the pyramid has existed since at least feudalism. How the pyramid is divided internally has shifted, which is cataclysmic on individual levels, and dominates the narrative of the time.

The middle classes have preven a good buffer since the French Revolution and if they cease to continue to act as such then they will be kept or facilitated in some shape or form by anyone with any sense.

100%. Plus places like this establish cultural norms that define how we interact with each other, as well as the range of opinions you will see expressed. You could argue that it's a bit like the echo chambers you can live within on Twitter but in any discussion on "modern social media" you're only ever a click or two away from getting sucked into interactions with actual pond-life. And/or being exposed to genuinely unpleasant or upsetting content. On here the worst thing you're likely to stumble across are those tactics videos with loads of different colour arrows... Actually, wait, maybe Twitter isn't that bad after all?!

That's the interesting part for me. People that are currently in power seem to not realize how fragile their status are if the silent majority riot. The question is when are we going to reach the breaking point, to me it doesn't seem to be far because from my understand currently no western country has a genuinely good political movement, they are all shades of terrible and all seem to work against the majority for their own benefit.

Is social media part of the reason for the lack of visible protest? Musk and the like are dangerous, racist people and although there's a lot of talk about it, that's all it seems to be. When it gets to critical mass I'm sure that will change, but the actual movement seems to be individuals with a lot of people agreeing rather than organised dissent with plans.

Fragile in theory. In practice, not so much?

Since Ancient Greece (and well-before that) in terms of economic structuring along tripartite "levels" of citizen. It's Babylonian and goes back a long, long time.

Modernity is sometimes an illusion where people are convinced that there is something super-special about it. The means of production and the centralized city (mechanized/electiry) is really all that has changed in that length of time with about three exceptions: liberation movements (achieving "person" status for various people), the general death of the slave economy and I cannot think of a third (all the Labour gains are within the first really).

Modern day "caves". If you're convinced you've won the rhetorical battle online, are you going to go marching the next day? Sometimes, but mostly not. It's been a disease on culture in my opinion. The upside, which has to be remarked, is non-legacy media which media has always been propaganda. However it is nuanced as the new media, independent journalism with large audiences, can range from great to unhinged.

In historical terms, revolt is the exception despite the oppression being pretty much continuous to various degrees.

I was going to say maybe but something crossed my mind. Basically my observation is a lack of public figures that speak sense for the mass, they speak for minorities but not the majority. Currently most if not all political groups seem to focus on single core points that exclude others, the goal seem to be to divide and rule not unite and prosper. And that's largely done through social media and online where audiences can be targeted. And competing minorities won't move the needle.

Though I don't know if it's an accurate observation or if I'm imagining it.
