When SAF is going after a player its very rare that the papers have really been speculating about them? Its always a player that no one knows anything about until they are signed, there are all of about 2 or 3 exceptions, eg Yorke and Ferdinand. Mostly they are signed before the papers know what the f*%k is happening.

EG RVN, he was going to Arsenal or Chelsea, that was it and we were not even mentioned, all of a sudden he is having a medical at OT.

Ricardo, we were linked with every keeper in Europe except this goose, but yet there he was, out of no where.
 
Ferdinand had been rumoured since the world cup. Didn't the media speculate about his arrival for weeks before he signed?

There have been a couple of suprises. Cole and Cantona, but the rest of the big ones have been followed by the press.

Stam I heard mentioned once but then it went dead, then he just appeared, i heard us linked with RVN not once before he signed. Veron was mentioned a bit and Ferdinand went on for months BUT...

Taibi? Silvestre? Forlan? Ricardo? Blomqvist?

Im not stating its a hard and fast thing but on at least 50% of transfers its usually pretty quiet.
