Have we followed the same path as Spurs since the SAF era?

Both historic football clubs under the sixties with Spurs having the edge regarding trophies. Utd under Sir Matt and Spurs under Bill Nicholson. Both men having big influences in the running of their clubs. The years that followed brought moderate sucess at both clubs until Sir Alex walked through the door at OT.

Then with the arrival of Sir Alex, for the seasons that were to follow and up to the arrival (season 2013-14) of David Moyes, we were on a different planet compared with anyone else.

Then so many similarities over the years 2013-14 up till now. SAF left utd and Redknapp who’d brought a certain amount of sucess to Spurs, also left Spurs.

Since then both clubs seem to have followed the same path.

Current positoin in the table Utd 12th Spurs 14th

Other similarities:

Both crap on the transfer market

The levels of both squads about the same with market value around 800 mil

Numerous big name managers coming and going

No big trophies won (ok utd have 2 FA cups and a Europa League)

Both teams known for playing attractive football

Fans at both clubs in desparation with big expectations

I was going to say looking forward we are in a better situation than Spurs in terms of being a much bigger club and our new manager etc, but then I compared our stadiums and am not so sure.

No.

The trap at United is that fans' expectations are sky high which makes it very difficult to transition from being shit to being very good via being OK, quite good etc. Anything other than challenging at the top while playing good football is considered a crisis.

Spurs are shit and have been shit for as long as anyone can remember. No one expects them to be anything else.

Yes you're onto something. Another similarity is that we've both been playing on grass every week and also that we have fielded more than 10 players per game but less than 12 (okay we've gotten red cards at times).

Spurs' most successful spell is the early 80s: 2 FA Cups and a UEFA Cup

We've had since Fergie retired: 2 FA cups, 2 league cups and a Europa League.

Yeah but they pulled us apart not so long ago on our own patch.

Beg to disagree! Spurs were more sucessfull in the 60's winning the league twice. 60/61 they won the double having won the FA Cup 3 times over that period. They also won the European Cup Winners Cup.

Yep.

Modern thinking is so skewed towards only PL and CL titles mattering, that it seems to some that we've as good as won nothing over the last decade.

Whereas, actually, what we've won just in that time is more than most clubs have ever done in their history. It's just that expectations are so high at the club that much more is expected in the biggest two competitions.

We've still won more trophies than most other clubs even in one of our poorer spells when we've become (way too OTT) a joke amongst fans of clubs - most of whom have won way less in that time (Spurs included, having won absolutely nothing themselves).

Our underperformance has been more damning because we are a footballing powerhouse, which can't be compared with Spurs.

This made me giggle.

Over the period since Sir Alex as from 2014 we have the following results against Spurs:
11 wins, 4 draws and 9 losses.
Which would suggest we aren't exact a country mile ahead of them.

Their peak has been losing out on the title to Leicester and the CL to the dippers.
Ours has been winning those competitions.
We're more on par with the dippers, but we don't peak at the same time.
