Leonard Ellerbe appears to be making the rounds with news of a possible return by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2009. Ellerbe, close friend and adviser to Mayweather, first broke the news to boxing scribe David Mayo - revealing that Floyd is now willing evaluate any and all "big fight offers" that were presented to his team, and then make a decision on a possible return.
Ellerbe has since spoken with Dan Rafael, and provided more details on Floyd's comeback. Mayweather wants to go straight into a megafight. There will be no tune-up. Mayweather has been inactive since a last December's knockout of Ricky Hatton.
"Hell no [to a tuneup]. If Floyd considers something, it would be the biggest thing," Ellerbe said.
The biggest fight for Floyd in terms of money would be against the winner of Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton, who are close to deal for a May 2 showdown in Las Vegas.
Ellerbe told Rafael that Mayweather did watch Hatton's win over Paulie Malignaggi in November and watched Pacquiao's knockout of Oscar De La Hoya on December. He was impressed with both wins and praised both fighters. According to Ellerbe, Floyd thought his father [trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr] had improved the skills of Hatton. But, when it came to the subject of fighting Pacquiao, now considered the best pound for pound fighter in the sport, there was a mix of praise and trash talking. Floyd thought the De La Hoya win was tremendous, but also told Ellerbe that he would "beat Pacquiao's ass."
"He did see Hatton's fight and said it was the best Ricky had looked in a long time with his dad [Floyd Mayweather Sr.] training him. He said Ricky looked sharp with his father in the corner. [Floyd said Pacquiao] an excellent fighter and it was a tremendous win," Ellerbe said. "But, Floyd said, 'He's a good fighter, but I'll beat his ass.' "
According to Robert Snell in his Tax Watchdog Blog, public record shows Mayweather Jr owes Uncle Sam big time.
From theTax Watchdog:
What’s owed:
* The IRS filed a $6,165,735 lien against Mayweather for unpaid incomes taxes on Oct. 9 in Clark County, Nev. He owes the money from 2007, according to the Clark County Recorder’s office.
This could be the reason Floyd Mayweather Jr has shown some interest again for a big money fight and no tune up. According to his Advisor Leonard Ellerbee, Floyd gave him the go ahead to look for the best fight possible.
This comes as no shock to boxing fans especially the way Floyd Mayweather Jr supposedly spends his cash and throws out Benjamin Franklin’s to crowds at the clubs and parties he attends. Floyd throws money away like it grows on trees, unless it counts as a tax deduction it makes no real sense to me.
The biggest possible fight right now would be a fight with Manny Pacquiao who holds the title of pound 4 pound best boxer in the world, a title that Floyd held before his retirement. But from the looks of it that fight has to wait because the word on various boxing sites is Ricky Hatton vs Manny Pacquiao is almost a done deal for May 2, 2009. Floyd will probably face the winner of that bought.
I think Floyd will hijack the fight
Mayweather-Pacquiao would be out of this world. If that fight happens first then I we will get Hatton V Oscar at Wembley. After that Ricky will face the winnier of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.
I think Floyd will hijack the fight
Poor Floyd. You can almost guarantee that at the end of his career the guy, one of the greatest boxers of all time, won't have two nickles to rub together. He is probably the most insecure personality I've ever seen and that is why he throws his money away. His hundred man entourage, throwing money away at clubs, the guy just wants to be liked.
Britain’s IBO junior welterweight champion Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton will train for twelve weeks for his megabuck battle with Filipino ring icon and the world’s No.1 pound-for-pound fighter Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas on May 2.
The blockbuster showdown will be held either at the sprawling Thomas and Mack Center or the MGM Grand Garden Arena, both in Las Vegas .
Insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports had the opportunity to talk to Hatton’s father, Ricky Hatton, just as he was stepping out of his home to begin celebrating the New Year with friends.
Ray Hatton said Ricky Hatton would have a 12 week training camp but “may go over to Vegas a little bit late after training in Florida or he may train over here” in Britain . However, Hatton said they would discuss the details with Ricky Hatton and his trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr in early January after the New Year.
Hatton’s father said he expects the Pacquiao-Hatton clash to be “an absolutely super fight and anybody who likes their style and likes boxing, that’s what they are going to get. There is no way this fight will disappoint anybody. There’s not a chance for that.”
Ray Hatton said he expects Ricky to fight much better than in some of his recent fights pointing out that with Floyd Mayweather Sr, the fighter “went back to basics and Mayweather got Ricky to do the things he used to do…moving his head and also moving his feet . In the last couple of years unfortunately he’s not been doing that.”
Hatton said you could imagine what it will do when Mayweather Sr “picks up where he
left off doing the same sort of things again.”
Ray Hatton indicated that “the financial side I believe is already done” although he said “obviously we would have liked for Manny to come and fight over here.” He revealed “we are trying to put a little bit of a package together to see if we can make something agreeable to both sides to try and have it over here. But as you know America always has the big bucks so we’ll just have to wait and see.”
Hatton stressed that “most of the hard part, the financial side has been agreed on and both fighters want the fight to proceed” although he said they would have liked to have had the fight “a little bit later than the proposed HBO date (May 2) but unfortunately when an opportunity comes along you’ve got to take it.”
Before ending Ray Hatton said he was going to enjoy “one helluva New Year and we’re going to have one helluva fight.”
Former two division champion Miguel Cotto is in training for his February 21 bout against Michael Jennings. The vacant WBO welterweight title will be on the line. If he gets past Jennings, a rematch with Antonio Margarito is already set for June. Beyond those two fights, Cotto was asked directly about a fight with Manny Pacquiao. Both men are promoted by Top Rank.
Last week, uncle and trainer Evangelista Cotto told El Nuevo Dia that a fight with Pacquiao is not beyond the realm of possibility. Miguel shares the same feelings as his trainer. He wants the big names and is willing to fight whoever Top Rank places in front of him. If Top Rank offers him a possible fight with Pacquiao - it's a fight he will take.
"My promoter has some set plans for me, and if Manny Pacquiao is part of those [plans], I'm ready to fight him. I am always available to fight the big names and Manny Pacquiao is one of them," Cotto told El Nuevo Dia.
Cotto plans to fix any of the holes that exist in his style. He wants to correct all of his mistakes from July knockout loss to Margarito.
"We are going to take a look in camp on what exactly affected us, what hurt us in the fight and work to correct those things," Cotto said.
Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. has made a prediction, he says Ricky Hatton will stop Manny Pacquiao when the two square off on May 2 in Las Vegas. Mayweather says that unlike De La Hoya, Hatton will not kill his body to make weight and he will be the stronger and better fighter in the ring.
"I believe that Ricky Hatton can stop Manny Pacquiao. The best man will win on that night but it’s my man who’s going to be the best man that night. Pacquiao is not going to be the best fighter that night. Ricky will not go into that fight like De La Hoya, who was dehydrated," Mayweather Sr. told the Manila Bulletin.
Mayweather admits that Pacquiao is the faster fighter and even praised his chin. He plans to map out a strategy to take away Pacquiao's jab in the fight and set a course for Hatton to stop the Filipino fighter.
"I can’t take that (speed) away from Pacquiao. But if there’s one thing that Ricky will take away from Pacquiao, it will be his jab. I’ve got a whole lot of strategy. Hatton is stronger than Pacquiao," Mayweather Sr. said.
Last week, trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. made comments regarding Ricky Hatton's ability to stop Manny Pacquiao on May 2 in Las Vegas. Mayweather says Hatton is stronger and will put Pacquiao away after wearing him down.
Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach has fired back a prediction of his own - Manny by knockout in nine rounds. Roach knows Hatton is tough and he knows Hatton is dangerous but he says Manny is too quick and too strong.
“Ricky is a tough guy and he’s durable but I think we will get him in the later rounds. Ninth round? Yeah. That’s my favorite number. Yes, I think we’ll get Ricky in the later rounds,” Roach said to Filipino outlet Philstar.
CLK, whats the name of that up and coming kid ..
"Vicious" Victor.. is it Ortiz or something? The guy who gave DLH that shiner during a sparring session.
How do your rate him? feck me, he seems a proper prospect in my opinion.
CLK what weight do you think they will fight at if it goes ahead light welterweight 140 or welterweight 147. If its at 140 I think Ricky has a chance.
This fight has to be at 140 otherwise it doesnt make sense, Pac-Man would be 2-3 weights above his optimum and Hatton 1, therefore I think the best fight we can all get is at 140 because its unrealistic for Hatton to go down to 135 and if he does its suicidal on his part, time for Hatton to fight a big name at his best weight, last time he did that he retired Tszyu. If this is finally confirmed I just may be buying box office for the first time depending on the undercard.
Hatton's probably the biggest draw in boxing today. Pacquiao would be nuts to turn down the fight, considering he'll probably get the biggest pay-day of his career, and in my opinion he would destroy Hatton.
Promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank has revealed that Manny Pacquiao has come to his senses and accepted the agreed upon 50-50 split to fight Ricky Hatton on May 2 in Las Vegas. Arum expects the fight to be signed by the end of the week. The media blitz began when Pacquaio's attorney Franklin Gacal told reporters that his fighter would not accept a 50-50 split and wanted a deal with terms for a 60-40 cut. Not long after those words reached the media, Hatton's attorney, Gareth Williams, threatened to sue Pacquiao for backing away from the deal that was verbally agreed upon.
Arum spoke with Pacquiao and explained that unlike Hatton's bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2007, he would received a cut of the British television money. When Hatton face Mayweather, the Manchester fighter kept all of the British TV money.
"By tomorrow, I'll have a signed contract. There was a lot of confusion about why we did 50-50, but everyone now understands why this is a good deal," Arum said to The LA Times. "This thing is going to happen. Yesterday was disarray. Today, everything's back in order. Everybody is now calmed down."
Ricky Hatton is prepared to walk away from a potential fight with Manny Pacquiao, scheduled for May 2 in Las Vegas. If the Filipino fighter does back away from his demand of a 60-40 split, Hatton will take an offer for another huge fight in the British Isles. Ray Hatton, father and manager of Ricky, says the offer for the British Isles event is on the table and they are seriously considering the fight.
The negotiations for Pacquiao-Hatton have been in limbo for the last few days. In December both sides agreed to an even 50-50 split, but the negotiations took a turn for the worse a few days ago when Pacquiao backed away from the agreement, claiming that he personally never agreed to anything and then made a firm demand of a 60-40 split. Hatton refuses to sign for anything less than a 50-50 split.
"We have the offer of another massive fight in the summer, in the British Isles, which would bring a crowd of 80,000 or more," said Ray Hatton to The Telegraph. "We are extremely serious in our threat that we will pull the plug on Pacquiao and go for that alternative if that contract is not signed. We will not be messed around."
Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, hopes that his fighter stops listening to the people around him and comes to his senses.
"We've all agreed to it, but now people are whispering in Pacquiao's ear. There's no way he's getting 60–40. Unless he comes to his senses and people start acting intelligently ... we'll see if we can keep this together, but the split is supposed to be 50–50.
Just get it signed already, Pac should just get it signed and let the fight be on level terms as its only fair on both fighters.
Off topic but what do you think of Tyson Fury CLK? Already comparing himself to George Foreman after 2 fights.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is playing his last card – a 52-48 percent split of revenues in favor of Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao in his scheduled May 2 showdown with Britain’s Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton.
In an overseas telephone conversation from Las Vegas , the astute promoter said there was a “little change” from the originally agreed upon 50-50 split between Pacquiao’s promoter and Hatton’s handlers who conceded to a 52-48 in favor of Pacquiao.
Arum revealed that “they all say its going to happen but it has to happen today (Monday, Manila Time.” That’s because Arum said he has a conference with the Hatton representatives, presumably lawyer Gareth Williams, at ten o’clock on Monday ( US Time.)
He said Pacquiao “has the contract and hopefully he’s going to sign because we are talking about millions of dollars that Hatton is going to bring in” besides proving that Pacquiao was able to get things changed in his favor.
Arum said flatly “if we don’t make a decision, there won’t be a fight.”
Pacquiao had earlier demanded a 60-40 split but told us on Sunday that there was a possibility of a deal being done on a 52-48 or 55-45 revenue split.
One of his close friends Rex “Wakee” Salud explained that the 55-45 split was premised on the possibility of Hatton getting the bigger cut on British pay-per-view buys and Pacquiao enjoying the advantage in the rest of the world.
However, it was pointed out that such a deal may work to the disadvantage of Pacquiao financially since historically the British PPV market in most big Hatton fights was huge and the best example was the Hatton clash with Floyd Mayweather Jr which drew over 1.25 million buys in Britain and only 850,000 in the US ..
Salud disclosed what Arum believed was the reason behind Pacquiao’s demand for a 60-40 split and that was his desire for a higher guarantee. Pacquiao received a $11 million guarantee for the Oscar De La Hoya fight last December 6 while De La Hoya received a 20 million guarantee. Salud hinted that if Arum upped Pacquiao’s guarantee the deal could be made.
Arum appeared peeved over people who keep whispering to Pacquiao, claiming “they know nothing” while trainer Freddie Roach was reportedly disappointed that he’s called Pacquiao several times and hasn’t been able to talk to him or receive a return call.
Pacquiao, accompanied by veteran congressman Eddie Gullas paid homage to the miraculous Sto Nino image Monday afternoon after a meeting with some of his advisers but there was no word at press time whether he had accepted the counter proposal from Arum.
