Billy Graham says he has retired because he was sacked by Ricky Hatton.

The trainer confirmed to his decision to call it quits on Tuesday following a meeting with the Hitman, ending their 11-year partnership.

Reports suggested that ill health - Graham's hand problems had been well-documented - were behind the retirement and Hatton's father and manager Ray told Sky Sports News the 'Father Time had caught up with him'.

Graham had always said he would call it quits when his number one fighter did, but has now revealed he is giving up earlier than planned, because he was sacked.

"I had said that it was always my intention to see out my time in boxing as Ricky Hatton's trainer," he told Britishboxing.net.
Meaning

"I made the decision to accept the injuries that come with the role in order to retire with the fighter who I will always be remembered for. My retirement was brought forward because I was sacked from my role.

"I said I would leave with Ricky and wouldn't carry on in the sport after he had retired."

Hatton is now looking for a new trainer for his IBF world title fight with Paulie Malignaggi in November, with Lee Beard the leading candidate to assume the role in full, following Matthew Hatton's decision to use him - and not Graham - for his next fight.

Graham will bow out of the sport on Friday in Watford journeyman Ojay Abrahams' 100th and final fight and insists he is happy to be going out in that manner.

"The way things have panned out means I have brought my own retirement forward...in the end it worked out well because it means working with Ojay for his final fight has more meaning."

Sad that they couldn't stay together right to the end....

Personally I think Hatton needs to hang up the gloves after his next fight..

He should've gone after his last fight but the lure of one last pay cheque was too much.

Agreed and I could see it going the sameway again for him.

He should never have been allowed fight Mayweather, should have stuck to his natural weight division, kept on fighting the best it had to offer and retired unbeaten...

Yeah Mayweather is in a different league in both weight and ability but money talks.

Its a shame that he ended up being sacked, he has been great for British boxing but it was obvious his health was catching up with him.

Probably should have went out on a winning note a while ago.

Right on all three counts, he boxed Mayweather Jr. as well as he could and was completely annihilated, tbf Mayweather Jr. is in a different class from everybody

Hatton is no-where near the class of Mayweather & never will be unfortunately!

These "great" boxers are well below the level that greatness is usually attached to. Hattons a decent fighter but not a great one.

The whole talk at the moment is Hattons final few fights before he retires. RETIRE'S - has he fought anyone yet. Surely you expect a "great" fighter to have fought his fair share of great opponents. Same with Calzaghe - he's fought pretty piss poor opponents & most have been in Wales - his own back garden.

He's going for the big pay in Madison Square Garden - why didnt he accept these sort of challenges years ago instead of being chicken shit & wanting home comforts!

Thats the one thing about these boxers - they're only great in the British media - everywhere else they're pretty average. Calzaghe had the class to become a legend but choose to avoid the big cheese & instead took the Dairylea option - there'll always be questions asked about the quality of his opponents!
