Harry Potter is gash

Never understood it really, or more specifically the adults who like it.

I know it's fiction/fantasy, but it just goes too far. Completely unbelievable.

I mean, magic and unicorns maybe, but have you ever seen a ginger kid with two friends?
:lol::lol:

 To be fair I can't wait till the new book comes out. Started reading them when I was ten and that was ten years ago!

It is a good kids book though, pretty easy to read all round.

Its wonderful and enthralling - but to you lot out there on brought up onFM or other computer generated pap enjoy and leave us to slip through page after page of imaginative writing

you know what mate I agree. As a fan of both FM and HP, its all good.

 Nice.

Harry Potter is a book for people who don't like books. It annoys me whenever I hear people talking about this or any other shite (eg. Lord of the Rings) as being amongst the greatest books of all time. I pity people who think this.

Seems like I'm agreeing with everyone today but yeah I also agree with that. Harry Potter is a rather enjoyable read but as a work of literature it isn't the greatest ever. For me it's a bit like Shrek, something both kids and adults can enjoy but no way can it be considered a great piece of art of all time.

Lord of the Rings was a disappointing read tbh, the first book I thought was good, but I couldn't keep up with the other two.

i read a lot of books, and whilst i do enjoy the harry potter books, LOTR was utter wank. so fecking boring it was incomprehensible

Yeah I struggled to read the LOTR books at first, only read them during one summer of pure boredom. I was never a huge fan of it.

It's the revenge of the geeks - the 'cool' kids still clueless

Harry Potter is good. Not a classic, but a very enjoyable read.

Harry Potter is the bane of my existance, i hates it....whoever invented it should be made to suffer for a hundred years.

I have never read any of the books but my son is getting to the age where it is going to happen soon.

I doubt that the author wrote them to be "great literature" rather to give kids a great read. Which she seems to have done rather well. Anything that encourages kids to read books is good in my book.

The films are also great fun. I have to watch loads of kids films and some bore me to death but I have no problem watching the Harry Potter films. They are fun, silly, well paced and look great.

I suspect that many people in their late teens and 20s profess not to like them mainly to make sure people know that they are grown up and have put such silly childish things behind them.

MY kids have read all the books which has to be a good thing. HP also got them into playing chess. Personally I can't be arsed with it.

Agree 100%

When the first film came out I hadn't read any of them, and wasn't at all interested in seeing the movie or reading the books. A friend kept on at me, and eventually I gave in. Thankfully I did, because the books are certainly enjoyable reads from a narrative stand point. They may not be considered literary books, but they are fun to read, full of ideas and mystery.

To think that the books helped a generation of school children to get interested in reading, is a remarkable achievement. For that sole reason, they have merit and deserve some respect.

If you think (as I once did) that they are childish nonsense, then maybe give the first book a go, as you just might get hooked.

Yeah, I think there's some truth in that. I read the first Harry Potter book when I was ten, and while I'd admit it'll never be my favourite, it was a decent read, and certainly worthy of any child's time.

I read the first one when I was 10.I liked the first three. It went from promising to supremely rubbish quite drastically

I think you got it spot on mate.

If the Harry Potter books are genuinely being used as a gateway for children into literature and books then of course that is a good thing. But I suspect that in reality the vast majority of the children will never progress to reading anything more worthy of their time than Harry Potter.
