United Chase Youngster

Before he retired Sir Alex Ferguson was keeping a close eye on the Sheffield United centre back Harry Maguire.

It would appear that Manchester United`s interest in the defender hasn`t waned with it now being intimated, by the morning press, United are still looking at the powerful defender who, at the age of twenty-one, has already notched up over 120 appearances for the Blades.

Rated at £4 million, it`s suggested that David Moyes will make a move for Maguire during the January 2014 transfer window, a rumour to keep an eye on I`d suggest.

Not sure why he might be good enough to play for United though.

Too British/Irish. Need more continental/South American players.

Sheffield United fans saying they would drive him here themselves for 4 million apparently hes had a shocking season

I can't really see how a £4M defender who has played 120 times in the Championship & no one has heard of is likely to be Premiership quality, & particularly not United quality.

Not even Championship. The Blades have been in League One for the past 3 seasons now. Still, I wouldn't say no one has heard of him though. He had a great season in 11-12 which he won alot of awards for and a couple of bigger clubs were linked with him, and he earned an U21 call up, which isn't bad considering there's a lot of Premier League players getting picked for that squad.

I'd heard that the season just gone was a bit poor compared to 11-12. Still, he's only 20, so I don't think anyone can say just yet whether or not he's good enough. He's got plenty of time to improve further at that age.

I've only seen him play once, but I remember him being a big fecking unit. Must be at least 6ft4 or 6ft5.

Players are spotted by coaches on their potential to adapt to a higher standard, not how they are coping where they currently are. See Chris Smalling for a definition.

Chris Smalling had played mostly lower level football before joining Fulham and then United.

Smalling played 12 times for Maidstone in the Isthmian league, moved to Fulham in the Premier League & played 13 times for them before moving to United, clearly in a completely different class to Harry Maguire. He also played for England at U18, U20 & U21 before stepping up to the senior team. He's a bit like the Bebe of defenders as far as fairly tales go, except that that he's a fecking amazing defender.

The point wwe were making wasn't about United's scouts, but rather Fulhams. A lad was spotted playing lower league football who clearly had potential.

Exactly my point, he was discovered in the lower leagues & catapulted direct into the PL. feck can you imagine a PL quality defender in that league? He must have been so far ahead of everyone else it must have been ridiculous!

Harry Maguire is a League 1/Championship quality defender, otherwise he would have been snapped up some time ago.

People making too much of a speculative article. Moyes goes to see a game involving one of his old clubs, someone decides that he must have been scouting someone.

Maguire looked an old fashioned English CB in the youth cup run, physically dominant at his age but limited technically and looked slow.

Or maybe they actually watch him every week and think he's shite?

You're wrong. Its because he's not as skilled as Fabregas. As a top red I'd rather have a limited player with ample workrate and little creativity then a technically gifted smallish type of player. Thank god Scholes was ginger or else I would have hated him too.

Chelsea want him aswell, according to some papers today.. Maguire is apparentlig dubbed "the new John Terry", I don't know how his teammates reacts to that news...

Quality stuff, devilish. Orwellesque, with a hint of Rabelais.

Ryan Shawcross clone?

Are they French?

I only read what the likes of Robbie Savage, Vinnie Jones and Nicky Butt write. Paddy Crerand is my official United critic. He's so objective and unbiased that often brings a tear to my eye.
