I think he's overrated. He started off magically by decimating Australia all those years back but I think he's always been overrated since. He has a nice 'doosra' but his regular off spinner doesn't turn enough. A fiery character who definitely brings a lot to the team, but hasn't lived up to the early hype for me.

Whadyaguysthink?

Well personally, besides Swann, I can't think of a better spinner in playing right now in world cricket in terms of consistency?

I enjoy watching him bowl just for his celebrations after getting a wicket..I rate him.

To be far, that's because there seem to be no top quality spinners around these days. He's entertaining no doubt in terms of character. But the reputation and name he's earned for himself doesn't quite match the performances for me. IMO he's good but not the 'great' that sometimes people think of him as or expected him to be early on.

On another note, how good is Swann? And tell me a bit about his game. I don't follow England much.

Swann is absolutely brilliant tbh...

I have only started following him the last 2 years or so, but from what I have seen, amazing bowler. The sort of revs he gets is crazy, and great thinker too. Joy to watch, he hasn't really perfected the doosra etc, but he is still very very effective...

He really caught my eye after the Ashes last year...and after the Pakistan tour this time around.

Watch this..

And..

He is a joy to watch, or maybe I just overrate spinners cause I rate Bhajji highly too in terms of ability. As for me, there is nothing more enjoyable to watch than a spinner bowling in a test match with the batsman surrounded by close in fielders.
In regards to Harbhajan, yes, perhaps last couple of years or so he hasn't been on top of his game or as good as we know he can bowl, but when he is on form he is a joy to watch. I absolutely LOVED watching him get Ponting out again and again and again and again during that tour of Australia a couple of years ago or so..

I'd say based on the last few years form Swann is the number one spinner in the world. The selectors never saw his potential early and has lost a good few years of international cricket. He takes both wickets and ties down one end. Not a very complicated bowler, and has very few variations. However, his stock ball is superb, and he does the simple things perfectly. Swann has a great record in tests, he reached 100 wickets in the same number of Tests as Warne, Kaneria and Saqlain.

have to say, always felt Saqlain had the potential to be so much more, always rated him highly.

I think that was ages ago! Ponting was his bunny, that was when he cemented his place in the team I think.

Problem is the bar was raised so high by the previous generation that players like Harbhajan seem alright to me. Warne, Murli, Kumble, Saqlain, Mustaq, we were really blessed with a whole host of amazing spinners.

Those are two class deliveries. Why has he played 24 games at the age of 31? That's an odd one given how much he turns the ball. Or is it somethng he does rarely?

To be fair, Sults, what the competition? But yes, the latter is a very good achievement.

Just strange how the selectors weren't able to see his potential if he turns it as much as those clips suggest.

Saqlain was amazing. He probably let himself down a little in tests was in one dayers he was a brilliant bowler.

English selectors in the past have always been prone to go for experience than give youth a chance. The last few years has seen a marked change in that philosophy, and it's reaping benefits.

Saqlain took up religion mid way through his career and was never comfortable with the circus surrounding Pakistan team and the lifestyle.

I don't think Harbhajan's overrated. No one seems to rate him these days.
