Haaland at City | Signs new 9.5 year contract

the greed is sickening. guys like this and Ronaldo etc who just cannot settle for 'enough' make me sick

It's not his fault City are throwing insane amounts at him. Is not like he went to SA to make money
not his fault no, but I don't think it's remotely possible he goes to Saudi. him going would be unprecedented and nothing like Oscar in China for example. Haaland is probably the best finisher in world right now so I don't think that's a possibility. I just think it's ridiculous negotiating from 350k to 500K for 10 years. sure wasn't that hateful pr1ck dad of his angling for a move to Spain after only arriving at city? and he had to get an insane cut of the transfer. Erling Haaland and his associates stink of greed in my opinion.

This is generational wealth guaranteed though, big difference. He has also hasn't been playing too well this season, like all of City. Easier to tie a player down when they're underperforming.
He's already got generational wealth, estimated net worth is currently $40m. It's OK to just say "he wants a shit tonne of cash" without sugar coating it.

This is why it’s a strong idea if 18/20 teams just refuse to play them outright after their relegation and they go up again. Money’s never a thing. Power is the only thing they’d respect

They are just laughing in the face of authority with this deal, makes me sick to my stomach

Today Pep finally almost used him the entire game like in Dortmund days on the break with space.
Yes Chelsea defended really bad, but this a more enjoyable version of Erling that of course needs this type of strategy apply by the Baldman.

Teams would have to allow space for that to be effective.

In part, it's true Chelsea was a temptation, yet Pep sometimes it's too much stubborn with his style and the message to his players.
There were lots of games in the past (even at Barca) that you could be more direct (even in those very succeesful days) and City didn't even do it ocasionally, seems this rough days has open the doors to try it more and is more than welcome

It's sort of a catch 22. You can't be direct if the space isn't there.

There is a lot of space for City nowadays because they aren't that good and teams don't respect their threat as much. This is exactly what happened in 2016-17... Which is partly why City ripped many teams to shreds the following season with their quality playing into space

If City recover to their past form teams will revert to dragging 747s in front of their goal and the space will disappear.

He's tried it more at City last couple of years but not often. He did it very well vs Arsenal once and this season tried it vs Liverpool for 20 minutes but Van Dijk quickly shut it down. He probably should do it a little more against teams like Spurs and Brentford though.

Not really, City even in recent times with Alvarez and Erling, when they still could hold to the ball, have more players in form, still chose time and again to sobe it endlessly even when both offered themselves into space time and again.
Even in the past with Barca it had to arrive Luis Enrique for them to actually play more frequently on mere counters and alternate possesion and reset with risking the ball more.

Today it was an extremely open game, no doubt about it, but if this rough patch opens the door for Pep to be more open with his ideas, that could be pretty great in the long term, even in matches that aren't as open as this one.

Great way to gain back respect from teams again. His football has slowly turned into being based on other teams sitting incredibly deep and now when teams stepping up and competing with us both technically and physically it has caught us off guard.

Yup, 2nd half today after the first being a little open it consistently negated Chelsea attack and press. I wouldn't like to see us base our game around it week in week out, but its another tool in the armoury that could be vital.

Was quite similar to a performance he had against Arsenal a few years ago. With a high line and not great defenders he can do real damage with his hold-up and deep runs.

This is where I'm at with it

I remember this game: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43186392

I wish I can find the highlight of Chelsea's team watching City pass it back and forth without trying to win it back

Yeah early 17/18 season was really the last time teams tried to go toe to toe with Guardiola but that side were both incredible with their recycling of posession and also had a direct route in behind defensive lines to Sane, Sterling, Aguero and Jesus with a De Bruyne in his absolute prime providing the service who himself always has been a transition-player at heart, and crucially Pep had not put on the handbrake in terms of transition football yet at that point.

The calendar year of 2021 is where I feel his tactics started to evolve into complete suffocation of the opposition in a more extreme manner than ever before and a ridiculously strict set of rules in terms of how to attack, and when you are allowed to play a risky pass and when you have to wait out the opposition dropping deep again to make the distance to your own goal so hard to close for them. This type of football obviously peaked during the treble, and while the cracks was there already last season it was enough for another title.

This year though it is hard to say if the deciding factor is if other teams are looking at our lack of physicality and how slow we have become on the ball or the fact that there is a growing amount of young managers coming into the league and having power, pace and pressure as their mantra. But either way it has shellshocked us into becoming a team that is there to be bullied, and the players have looked hesitant in how to approach this when the rules for how they are supposed to play hardly brings them out of their own half, when the whole Pep playbook is designed to get to be camped on the final-third

Always dangerous when coaches get wed to their own rules, and Pep always seek an element of control but him being willing to break so fundamentally with the tactics over the last few years today is a sign that he is finally ready to come back to the drawing board and design a new playbook for us.

But you also have to wonder if the players took the game by the scruff of the neck a bit themselves today, considering it wasn't really until Chelsea went "man-man" until we went all in on the direct-ball. But safe to assume he took the shackles off a bit already pre-match

I love how you’re all up in arms about a trail-breaking player wanting record wages, yet the Glazers and Brexit Jim can merrily sack hard working folks who annually earn a millionth of Jimmy's wealth, because apparently only some forms of greed get a free pass. Haland has worked hard to fulfill his potential, what have Glazers done exactly to leech off significantly more than Haland will make in his career?

Back to topic, a good game from him, hopefully he can get his season back on track.

Where am I up in arms? I just wanted some honesty. I was quoting a message saying "well this will give him generational wealth" as if his children and children's children are not already set for life. I've got zero issues with footballers maximizing their earnings. I'll give you an example, I was one of the few who compeltely backed when Oscar went to China because his reasons behind it were completely sound when a lot of people were criticizing him for having no ambition.

You should read what people actually write before going off on one after imagining what they wrote. Given your username its one of the most ironic things I've seen in a while.

In my defense, when I read up your thread I saw a back and forth around whether a player has a generational wealth or not. In my experience the people who get in these discussions also tend to expect footballers to be altruistic once they've sufficient wealth, completely ignoring the greed of the people whom they work for.
Fair enough if you're not one of those people, my apologies!

Fair dos. Appreciate the response, people on the internet can be civil!

This chimps rediculous contract is the only thing football related that can cheers me up this season. It’s massively going to bite them in the arse.
Wait until Pep goes and the next manager needs more than a tap in merchant.

Won’t matter to moneybags, they’ll just bench him. Kinda like what they have done since signing Grealish for a ridiculous fee to warm it.
As a state they do things no football club ever coud.

Stay humble, eh?

I don’t really get this one from Arsenal fans.

Haalands won everything there is too win. Arsenal have won f*ck all. He was right to tell them to stay humble. Until they actually win something, their fans acting like they are Real Madrid is tiresome.

FC115 ask you to hold that thought.

He has only won the extra CL, something we haven't. On the back of the biggest footballing scandal in terms of corruption there has ever been in the world, never mind England.

Yeah, some achievement.

You haven't won the league in about 700 years though.

Although you do have a fair point on the rest, we all know what City are about

They’re not United or Liverpool level but they’re a way bigger club than City historically, bigger than Chelsea too.

He needs to play for a team with direct football. Launch it in the box from a cross or hit them on the counter. Wasted at City this season despite winning it all before.
