Haaland at City | Signs new 9.5 year contract

Does that not mean his 900k a week needs to be amortised in half the time so they technically have 1.8m per week to deal with for PSR?

You ammortizise the cost of assets, because they fall in value over time. Wage costs is not an asset, it's a running cost.

I just don't understand what "trapped" means. Do you think he is implicated in some kind of illegal financial activities?

Haaland has been there two full seasons and has already won a bunch of trophies and broken all kinds of records. He also has the connection to the club through his father. This deal secures high income for a decade, and if they do get punished I'm sure he has an out in the contract somehow.

Don't think it's all that weird, to be honest. The biggest question mark is probably what happens once Pep leaves, which I imagine will be soon.

You don't think it's possible?

Is there any report of what weekly wage city are making up for this?
I am assuming they will say £350k per week.

Far from what I expected to see today. Such weird news imo. Specially with the 115 hanging over them, hope they haven't gotten good news from that case, so they can safely give him this contract, which probably includes a nice raise in wages.

It’s quite clever actually, this.

They’re letting people get used to the idea of them not getting a real punishment so that the reaction won’t be too strong when the announcement of their 30 point deduction and £100m fine comes out.

Although the precise numbers are currently unclear, people familiar with the deal say it is among the most lucrative sporting contracts ever and underlines the bond between Haaland and City.

he must be on crazy wages

Starting to spend big money and giving their top players massive contracts. They know don’t they.

feck all is happening to them

They were strategic about it in the past so that they could force lower transfer fee But higher wages.

If it's all about wages for him why even bother with the transfer clauses at City? I think it's always also been about moving up his idea of the football ladder. Whether that has another step for him or he already sees himself as at the very top is yet to be seen.

So how much do we really think it is? Because let's be honest, it's not just 500K a week.
This contract is going to make him a billionaire, imo. You're better off looking at the kind of money PSG were throwing at Mbappe and multiplying it by 2.5(?) for the length of the contract.

I doubt it's just cash, either.

It's either a really stupid or really smart decision by Haaland. He has no clue what sort of salary footballers will be earning in 5 years time and he's taken away his opportunity to try and negotiate a salary that will put him on a par with his future peers. Which seems dumb. But maybe he's decided that, whatever happens, he'll always be a very wealthy man? And a ten year contract sets him and his family up for life, no matter what goes on in his career from now on. Which would be unusually smart for a footballer. So yeah, not sure how to feel about this.

30 points might just relegate them with the form they've been in!

Fairly certain he’s on ”hidden” money and incentives to a level no regular footballer will ever likely see at a regular club. He has nothing to worry about with regards to his peers in 5 years time.
All this whilst wages in Europe appear to finally be coming down.

People really have to remember that City have never lost a De Bryune, Kompany, Silva, Aguero or Rodri, despite the fact we know that these players at every other club would’ve been constantly “admired” by Madrid.
Crystal clear all of them are/have been on way WAY more money that most could even imagine and that their agents have made it known it aint even worth bothering.

It surely won't be a flat rate from now until 2034 though right? Like it must go up by 5%/10% every year or two or something.

Even if we were to accept that the only income Haaland recieves from City is just through this contract (and I doubt that), in 2034 that salary will surely be north of 750K.

It's bizarre to me that they're just continuing on continuing on. There can't be anybody who believes this contract at face value.

I’d hazard a guess that he and his family are already quite set for life.

Yet sensible posters like Pogue seem to somewhat and can “question” if this deal is smart from the player.
I mean, even Pep is likely to spend a decade at City, after only managing 3 at his boyhood club and 2 at Bayern.

These players and managers, the ones City see as indispensables, don’t ever have to worry about their fecking peers man, just look what Saudi can pay Ronaldo to play in that league and you’re probably starting to understand the riches we’re talking about here for these City players.

This is actually very in-line with what Haaland has always preached. People have assumed and reported that he likes the idea of playing every top league and for some of the legendary clubs around europe like his idols Zlatan and Ronaldo. But while I think he wants that he has mostly just talked about the importance of stability financially and emotionally and learning a lot of the fact that his father had to retire a bit before he felt finished (no, not because of Roy Keane).

Of course the wages Erling is on and his riches already is a different kettle of fish to the wage Alfie retired on, but I definitely think it is the Haaland camp that has pushed for the unprecented length of the contract. Very secure for the him, and him being a world-class striker at the moment but also globally a huge name it also makes sense for the club. But if he wants a transfer away at any point, he will get it so it doesn't really change anything other than Haaland securing his future and City being in a better bargaining position with him for the next decade IF he wants to move on.

It is only City that can be the losing part in this if his body breaks down for majority of those years and his stock plummets which could happen of course, football is fickle. But camp Haaland is golden either way

Very unlikely, I would say. He can get insanely rich through legal means.

Right.

So lets look at Pep, 10 years at City, 5 of those with his family having moved home, separated from his wife of 30 years, visibly looks to be cracking up. Everytime he said he might leave, his contract gets renewed.

And we're supposed to just believe that he had no problem walking away from Barca and Bayern after a few years, but is so so happy to stay at City for 10.

Just like we're also supposed to believe that the guy who apparently had a plan to move around the top leagues every few years and with all the charges still unresolved. That he's just happy to sign this massive deal before all that has been resolved.

None of this proves anything. It's tinfoil hat stuff.

It's not impossible that there is shady stuff going on. I'd believe it more with Pep than with Haaland. But there are plenty of other factors that can explain why someone like Haaland would want to commit his future to Man City.

It is pretty much well documented at this point that his burnout at Barcelona that he took a year off from stemmed from the politics in the boardroom in a club he loves and grew up in. And at Bayern there were constant bickering with the higher-ups about players and staff.

At City he has had his mates in the boardroom and pretty much a free reign to do whatever he wants. He has also been immensely succesful without having been under immense pressure by the fans or the board at any point. At Bayern the success of Heynckes last season always lingered.

Married people seperate all the time. In all walks of life. Your arguments is as straw-man as you can get

Just shows how persuasive a lot of money can be. I don't doubt that the club gets the money through shady means and might pay it just as shady to circumvent rules, but that's a different issue.

City fans will have you believe they're nothing but a well oiled machine, built from the ground up and now have all the other teams petrofied. The pressure to stay at the top must be immense. I feel sorry for them really, they didn't ask for the state they've found themselves in and are now looking down the barrel of a severe punishment that could leave them a shell of their former selves. Supporting that, and a team that have lit the fuse to the beginning of the end of the beautiful game, must be criminal for them. Actually, no I don't feel sorry for them at all. Feck 'em!

I reckon Pep would privately love to replace him with a false 9 type of player but City are rightfully thinking about the future and how useful Haaland can be to different types of coaches going forward.

So why are City carrying on like its business as usual? Doesn't make much sense unless they know they are only getting a fine and a small points deduction

I'm assuming they're acting like it's business as usual because another couple of hundred million isn't going to make much difference in the grand scheme of things and they're trying to brazen it out. Why act guilty?

There are basketball and American football players on 50 million dollars a year and more, so if its genuinely one of the most lucrative sports contracts, hes got to be around a million a week in dollars, which is what, £750K or so.

Such a bizarre decision to give players huge contracts.
It's not like we haven't seen great players get one bad injury and they never regain form.
We've got a whole collection of them right now at Carrington.

Are those contracts usually this long? Asking because I have no idea. The franchise player type of contracts is usually massive in economy and length aren't they?

It’s mad from City let’s be honest. A career ending injury or emergence of a back issue or loss of pace or motivation or whatever and they’re stuck with a lump on huge wages.
