Jake Gyllenhaal has been signed to star in Disney's Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time - after months of speculation surrounding the movie's male lead.

The Brokeback Mountain star has been confirmed to play the title's Prince Daston in moviemaker Jerry Bruckheimer's film adaptation of the hit computer game, according to industry publication Hollywood reporter.

Initially, reports suggested Orlando Bloom was to play the lead, with speculation suggesting he was set to received a huge GBP20 million fee for the role.

But the reports were denied by Disney last month.

The film will also star Bond Girl Gemma Arterton, and is slated to be directed by Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire filmmaker Mike Newell.

Work on the epic movie will start on 19 June at UK based Pinewood Studios, with location work in Morocco.

The Sands Of Time will be the first in a trilogy of films based on the games.

Sounds interesting. I wonder how violent it's going to be. I played Prince of Persia on x-box and it was a pretty good game imo.

I don't like him, something about him rubs me the wrong way. Jared Leto would have been a much better option

My first thought with Gylenhaal was how shit a choice he is but then I thought about different actors and realized no one really has the right look to pull it off. Leto would be a great choice though... He hasn't had that much experience of a lead role in big movies but he's a great actor and would definitely look the part

And lo, despite all evidence to the contrary, Jared Leto was described as "a great actor".

And God wept.

If Gyllenhaal keeps that thick beard for the movie he could pull it off imo.

Its Disney. It will be as violent as Pirates of the Caribbean. To be honest there should be shit loads of blood (not so much in Sands of time i suppose) and violence because thats part of the story.

I like him, great actor and funny. I don't see much potential in Prince of Persia though and he doesn't strike me as an actor who would do very well in adventure movies - although he has proven himself in every single role he's been given so far.
