I think as time has gone on, it has become more broadly accepted that there are 3 centre-forward kings, and then everyone else falls behind them.

In whichever jumble that suits, they are: Gerd Müller, Marco Van Basten and Ronaldo. In this vid, Van Basten displays precisely why he is one of them. It should also be apparent why comparisons with him should be almost non-existent, as is for the other two.

Interview is Gullit-centric and very good as it displays a lot if footage that shows both how good he was, but also the level of football such teams as Holland were playing in an era many now believe wasn't a patch on what is considered "modern football".

Worthwhile tidbit at 09:30 onwards for those that dismiss tiredness at the end of an arduous campaign.

loved watching Gullit play was gutted when he went to Chelsea

personally I'd have fat Ronaldo in that elite group of strikers as well though

That's a nice interview. Almost more about Van Basten than Gullit himself! :) And yes, interesting point about post-season fatigue - it's interesting how the psychological part comes into it.

Ronaldo is the reference. It’s about pure #9’s.

Yeah the energy dump is real, and combined with a genuinely tired body, can be a hurdle too far. Several top players look really out of sorts at the Euros, and I think the reason why is pretty clear.

fair enough I thought you meant Cristiano but yeah makes sense

Shame the video is already down. Any mirrors?

I’ve always said that the two best out and out centre forwards in history are Van Basten and the original Ronaldo, both managed to win Balon D’Or/W.P.O.T.Y three times despite losing about 4/5 years each of their careers due to injury which just shows the level they were at.

As a kid my three favourite players were Bryan Robson, Maradona and Van Basten although I only caught their careers from around 1985/86 onwards, I was lucky enough to catch all of Ronaldo’s career as there was a lot more access to European league football by then.

Ruud is awesome. And funny! Something I found out a few years back…through this video:
