With the world cup around the corner, footie is at fever pitch here in SA. recently I read a article about 10 young players to watch at the World Cup and this lad was mentioned.

I have also read Arsenal is following his progress keenly.

As Dutch football is not much broadcast here in SA, I do not know too much about him, other then him being Ajax's player of the season? (I thought initially it was Suarez, so please correct me if I am indeed wrong).

So too all our Dutch league followers, does anyone know anything about him? Who is following him, how much he would be worth if he had a decent world cup and if he is first choice RB for the Dutch?

He's looked good but then so did Bosingwa in the past. Amazing to think that they spent around £30m on Bosingwa and Paulo Ferreira.

Unbelievable fee for him. Way to go Ajax.

Football premier-league: Chelsea agree deal for van der Wiel - reports | Radio talkSPORT

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Ajax defender Gregory van der Wiel according to reports in Holland.

The Dutch international has been tracked by a host of Premier League clubs all summer with Manchester United, Manchester City interested as well as European giants AC Milan and Inter Milan.

But it now appears that Andre Villas-Boas has beaten them to the highly-rated 23-year old’s signature in a deal worth around €32m.

Why on Earth do Chelsea want him? Bosingwa is looking relly good and they have Ivanovic as cover. Unless he see's Ivanovic as a centre half and nothing else.

Yeah I think they see Terry-Luiz and Alex-Ivanovic as back up for them. Right now its Bosingwa and Ferrera on the right wing and the latter just sucks balls.

It should be a combo of Ivanovic/Alex/Luiz, with Terry getting phased out imo. Of course that wont happen because John Terry is captain big man, and thank god for that really. If they refuse to see him as the liability that he has become its only to our benefit.

If anything Alex will be phased out. He is the oldest of the four and there are reports of him leaving Chelsea this summer. Terry is only 30. He still has two to three good years in him.

Terry is not a liability

Not sure I can put my faith in a Talksport article, but that fee seems mental. No doubt the usual Talksport fabricated shite.

fecks sake this forum is ridiculous sometimes. I think we all agree Terry is over rated, but he's nothing close to a liability. Sometimes people get so wound up about how over rated a player is that they genuinely start believing he's shit. He's consistently been touted as the best defender in Europe, which is wrong, but he's been amongst the 5-10 best playing in England for about 8 years and there are no signs that's changing.

Amongst 5-10? Just out of curiosity, who all do you rate above Terry in the premier league?

Maybe liability was too strong a word, but he's certainly not as good as the Mourinho era Terry was. When I've watched them play in the last 18 months or so and he's been in the team, he'll play higher up than his centre back partner, almost in line with Mikel in the holding position. If this was tactical I'd assume his partner would move across more central to cover, but he doesnt and instead it just leaves a big gap down the left side of their defence because Ashley Cole also likes to go forward as well. Once the opposition get into that space behinf the left side of Chelsea's defence he doesnt have the pace to recover any more, and Alex/Ivanovic has to come across to cover, leaving the back post runner free.

Tchoyi would have scored exactly that goal for West Brom last week if Long had played the pass properly, all coming from Long running in behind the space vacated by Terry.

To summarize, he can't attack the space anymore?

Definitely Vidic, Ferdinand and Kompany and arguably Samba, Cahill, Vermaelen, Jagielka and Hangeland, who are all on a similar level in my mind. I'd say over the last year he's probably been in the top five.
