Now that I have a Rapidshare account and a bit of free time I'm in the mood for pirating some music so send in your recommendations, gimps.

And I'm referring to genuinely gifted people in the Aretha Franklin/Ella Fitzgerald/Marvin Gaye mould, not whichever T-shirt wearing no-mark happens to front your favourite rock band. I'd prefer if they were Soul/RnB/Jazz singers but am open to other suggestions.

Last night I discovered an incredible Texan soul/blues singer named Ruthie Foster on TV. Recommendations of singers like this one, who have are well known within certain circles but are not neccessarily recognisable to most people would also be appreciated.

MR..you silly willy.

There is nothing like greatest male or female voices of all time...

May be the greatest Male and Female voices after the recording companies started selling labels.

My Favorites Demi Roussos and Enya and also the voice of God Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

and 2334343322432 other Indian singers.

Reverend Al Green in his prime.

Aretha Franklin is obviously a good shout for the women. Billie Holiday as well.

This comes under the 'favorite rock band' category but I sincerely believe he has one of the best voices ever. Chris Cornell. Just download Badmotorfinger, Superunknown and Temple of the Dog to give it a try.

freddie mercury had a great voice.

If you like southern rock/blues rock you should try the Allman Brothers.

Other great soul singers besides the ones mentioned in this thread:

Otis Redding.

Wilson Pickett

I also really like Roy Orbison's voice

And here's a song by Claudio Villa, an italian singer. i'm in love with this voice. Been looking hard to find this song on a CD or vinyl.

Female: I'll have to go with Dusty Springfield.

Some tremendous suggestions here chaps, some of which I'm already familiar with, others not so.

A special thanks to Mehro who provided youtube clips of a number of great artists, and cleverly opened his contribution by forwarding Chris Cornell as a fine example of a one-note no-mark who belongs in a league 7 or 8 divisions below greats such as Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.

Lata Mangeshkar

Might as well close the thread.

I seriously think it's too difficult to dispute that claim considering the number of years she's performed, the number of songs, albums, hits...but put all that aside as well..

she's just too effing good in any and every genre and type of song.

Agree with Mehro on Chris Cornell. Sure he's been head of two big rock bands but his voice is just fantastic. You may prefer his solo record Euphoria Morning and the Temple of the Dog record.

Decided to check her out, nice voice, actual songs were quite painful though.

It is all very subjective on what is a good voice though, I would rather listen to Kurt Cobain's voice than R.Kelly's any day of the week but technically Kelly's is a superior voice.

Tom Jones
Barry White
Art Garfunkel

All have good voices.

I judge it on several categories - technical quality, versatility, how much heart and emotion they convey and distinctiveness.

Here's a guy who combines all of those qualities -

Michael McDonald (bearing in mind this is a live performance and he's also playing keyboard)
