Grasshoppers Zürich 1-2 Leeds

Leeds goalkeeper Nigel Martyn's penalty save against Grasshoppers Zurich proved vital in his side's Uefa Cup third round first leg win.

Leeds were trailing to Stephane Chapuisat's 18th minute goal when the penalty was given.

Defender Rio Ferdinand was booked for a foul on Richard Nunez, who got up to take the penalty only to see Martyn save.

Grasshoppers will be aggrieved that they did not make more of their possession against a weakened Leeds.

The visitors named only four substitutes because of absentees, and were grateful to Martyn on a number of occasions.

But a draw seemed an unlikely outcome even though Leeds enjoyed a bright start to the game.

The visitors should have taken the lead when Harte's left-wing cross found striker Smith.

But Smith went for a guided volley from six yards when a header might have been a better option.

The miss proved costly with Chapuisat scoring for Grasshoppers nine minutes later.

Chapuisat cut inside from the right flank and rode two challenges before powering in a left-foot strike past Martyn.

Danny Mills forced Grasshoppers keeper Peter Jehle into a fine save shortly after the interval but the home side soon regained the initiative.

Martyn had to save quickly in succession from Diop Bouba's well-struck shot and Ricardo Cabanas's left-foot effort.

Martyn then dived low to his left to save Nunez's penalty and this served as an inspiration to Leeds.

Harte converted a 22-yard free-kick before Smith slotted in to end Leeds' run of five successive defeats on their travels in European competition.
