Good 1st half....

i really hate to se united playing defend after they're leading, HATE IT, luckily we won !!!! <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

Very nervous second half, if only we'd kept possession better. I think we just lost our composure having lost that goal.

Oh FFS do you always have to find something to cry about ?
we won an away game at Leverkusen and have 6 points after 2 first CL games, when was the last time that happend ?

bloody hell.

You're right, I was just very nervous that second half is all, but what a great feeling and performance that first was!!! Beat them on their own soil! YESSS!

feck off!!

We're practically qualified for next round... I should say very good CL start Man Utd!!!!

.....great post great post, NOW, what about the second half ?

The header. I felt so down when it went in. And i was stunned when it came back of the post.

I'm still a bit  . Truly bizarre

It's a tactical match guys... open your eyes and see... SAF knows what he's doin'

the early goal give them some encouragement.
Gary was too slow to block him, but I wouldn't blame him, he just got back from injury and needed some time to get that sharpness back.
We were poor offensively but in the second half, and we still need some improvement but what the heck.. it's a win in the German's backyard !! :D

Superb win, and two superbly worked goals.

I was a little suprised Forlan came on instead of Ole. Forlan is hardly the man to lead the line, is he? Is Ole protecting an injury? Or was he being saved for Saturday knowing that RVN is maybe a doubt?

But weren't Bayer a bunch of diving feckers? Yes, Rio was wrong to clip the guy, but doesn't the guy who went down like he'd been shot have anything hanging between his legs? I'd be embarassed to be seen getting knocked over by THAT. Hope those nobs don't qualify.

I thought Barthez looked pretty sharp tonight too.

Can't really fault anyone!

why are you complaining its matches like these that won us the treble!!!!!!
in 98/99 we were always on the edge of our seats against the big guns,it was nerve wracking but a pure adrelenaline rush!!!!!!

thats what the CL is about, our defending reminded me of 99, can't remember a time after 99 where we were asked so many questions from the opposition but still came out on top and answered them all except twice (their goal and chance).

our concentration was the best so far this season. we even won some haeder against the big germans, although silveste did lose his battle in the air against their rb/rw's.

last year we could not defend like this even if we wanted to. the team was well hungry, phil neville, rio, veron and ruud stood out. :)

4-5-1 is starting to work isn't it? And Veron is starting to prove his worth.

Things are looking up. Lay off the team. WE WON IN GERMANY, bad 2nd half or no.

With 4-5-1 we've now laid our last 2 ghosts to rest. We won last season in Spain, and we won this season in Germany. May we do all 3 again this season.

I'm not taking away from the performance and result I merely asked what happend in the second half

everyone seemed to have missed nicky butt's incredible lay-off to ruud for the second goal.
with a chance to blast at goal, it takes someone incredibly cool to lay off a lateral pass for ruud to slide into the net. 99 players out of 100 would have gone for goal themselves; nicky's a true team player. I'm sure that coaches all over europe will be drooling over that pass.
(Reminded me a bit of Teddy's lay-off to Shearer in the 4 - 1 thumping of holland in Euro 98)

What happened was after coming out on top of the first half in the germans back yard they came out to take the game to us and as they were the home team They had the majority of the ball..

The good thing was how we seemed to defend as a team and our concentration level was very high, almost reminded of (hate to say it but) Liverpool way. Hitting them on the break we were creating more than they were with the ball for most of the 2nd half.

welcome lucius. yes, it was indeed an intelligent, cool and unselfish pass.

:)

good result, first half performance was class, second half was shite, could have been beaten
we were unlucky that RVN got a bang cos that was one of the best performances ive seen in a while,
no comments i see on the 4-5-1 system, which worked well last nite

I think the loss of RVN and JOS really offset the balance and rhythm of the team. Any sub needs about 10 to 15 mins to get into the rhythm of the game. Moreover Gary Neville has been out for over 4 months. Bayer was always gonna attack, nobody was upfront to hold the ball, Forlan surely isnt build for holding up the ball.

I think that the tactics in the second half showed the maturity that is needed in Europe to protect a lead.

I'm not sure I would class that as maturity though personally, I thought it we were fairly lucky to hold out for the win and felt uncomfortable sitting back like that.

The same tactics that lead to claims of "boring" when we utilise them..

"Mature" when you use them...

It was your deployment of them throughout the game, rather than when just defending a lead near the end of the game, that was boring.

Defending a lead at the end of a game?

You sat back all match, but were able to break when RVN was on the pitch..

Second half you didn't even try..

I thought it was a very exciting game, end to end, plenty of chances, some lovely moves - whereas I fall asleep at some point during yours - though recently your new attacking, but ineffective, game has been better, albeit lacking fluidity.

Ineffective attacking game?

Its seemed pretty effective to me..

The game last night was good to watch, mainly due to Bayer

Alright Ruddy don't cry...I've already stated it was an excellent result..

That doesn't alter the hyprocrisy in calling us "boring" when we sit back, whereas you are "mature"

who'd be bitter towards a team we've won far more than? surely the one playing catch-up is the bitter one?
