Mr.Scholes has had a couple of 'off seasons' but when he does play he seems to take this more defensive role than an attacking one, was this perhaps one solution to Fergusons defensive problems by playing him in a slightly more defensive role for the times when he did play?

Anyways, now that Rio is here, Im not saying that the defensive problems are solved because he's not played ina United shirt yet, however, will the pressure be off slightly and let Scholes go back to more of an attacking role and perhaps see a better season from him?

United should go back to basics IMO. 4-4-2. This is the way we have played and were succesfull with. If that means a midfield of Becks-Keane-Scholes-Giggs then so be it. With this formation, we have won trebles and doubles. Why mess with it if it is not going to improve results and/or the way we play.

I think everybody will agree that Paul Scholes has been a shadow of his former self recently, and if this is down to having to be moe defensive then it is a management decision. A wrong one as it did not pay off. But I think it is more down to the loss of form than anything else, maybe down to not being 100% happy with the changes to the team. Lets hope that the signing of Rio will give the necessary lift to the side so we can conquer Europe and all Domestics in the coming season.

I think a certain 28.1 million pound man will have something to say about that, I am sure he won't be happy with a place on the bench!

this isn't goin' to turn into a Veron thing again is it!? <img src="graemlins/yawn.gif" border="0" alt="[Yawn]" />

No one's happy about being on the bench!

But if you ain't the best, that's where you'll be.

I agree with the Munkee ( <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> - how funny does that sound - sorry Im drifting)

If your not good enough to play then you'll be on the bench or perhaps not even in the team, if it really comes down to watching Veron twiddling his thumbs next season on the bench . . .

(Which I hope wont happen because he can be an awesome player and have faith in him for now)

. . . Because a certain Mr.Scholes is having a blinding season and just can't be stopped then so be it

However, Scholes as I mentioned before has had a bit of an off period and appears to be playing a more defensive role than he used to maybe due to the fact the defence wasn't all that, however, now that Rio is here perhaps the pressure is off slightly and may be able to drift back into his unstoppable Paul Scholes routine like we used to see in the past

I agree to some extent. Yes, 4-4-2 should be our first choice. But depending on injuries, players in good/bad form, suspensions and of course the development of a match we should always be able to play 4-3-3 or 4-5-1. Knowing how to play 4-5-1 will do us no harm.
