Although over the past year or so Phil Neville seems to have lost it a little, I don`t agree with those who have written him off. ALL defenders make mistakes yet Phil`s seem to be blown out of proportion. When people start criticising heavily defenders and blaming them for a team`s loss or draw, they have to look at what led up to the opposition`s goal and it often starts with slack passing or mistakes futher up the field.

I am hoping that Phil takes his chances with both hands and shows the form he is capable of. Despite his noises about leaving (that was simply an airing of frustration, I believe), he would sincerely wish to stay with the club he has grown up with.

He is one of the most loyal Red Devils there has been, and he is also versatile, and he has the ability to prove that he is more than a squad player. Nicky Butt thought he had been left behind, too, watching the way the youngsters he had grown up with cemented places in the first team.

It`s not too late for Phil Neville - I just hope he shows everybody his real ability. <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" /> <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" /> <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

Me too! But his defending for the first leg CL match was crap... hope that Rio is the solution...

Im a Phil fan too, hes better than his recent form. Up to a yr or two ago i would have even rated him higher than his brother.

Murt, in all seriousness, there's no one you don't think is great is there?

I never said he was great. There are literally hundreds of fullbacks better than him in the world but as ive said elsewhere, hes versatile, half decent, a trier & a red so as a 5th choice full back who settles for a bit part hell do for me.
There are some Utd players i think are better than others too.

He has been poor this season. I'm not sure why he went to the press saying he'd have to think about leaving if he didn't break through. I understand why he'd feel that way, but why didn't he just talk to the manager about it? I think all he succeeded in doing was putting more pressure on himself.

With all our defensive problems, this has been a great opportunity for him. But it's up to him to take advantage of other player's misfortunes (as O'Shea has done).

Hopefully, he'll be able to string together a few decent performances starting on Tuesday and get his confidence back up. Because I think a lack of confidence is his main problem right now.

Phil plays boring football, always long ball and inaccurate

Ryan Giggs's poor involves him scoring a goal. Phillice Neville's involves him making a schoolboy error which may cost us a place in the CL this season.

Here's what he reckons:

I should have dealt with the free-kick but I am getting used to the criticism now," Neville told MUTV.

"I know the slightest thing I do will get highlighted and criticised.

"But actually I was quite pleased with my performance in that game and I need to continue that.

Apparently that was a good performance from him. Can't wait for a poor one!

Well, actually, I count the champions league qualifier, so it's 3. Know it's not a lot of matches, but when someone talks about wanting to break into a team or they'll have to think about leaving, it's an important run of games. In 3 matches, O'Shea's been good enough so that most people want him playing instead of Larry when Rio's fit again.

Agree that Giggs has been off his game. But he did score an important goal against Chelsea and might have had 2 if Ruud didn't take that one ball off his toes. That's not to say that I don't hope for a lot more from Giggs this year because his form is clearly off. But Giggs is still contributing...

As for RVN, I thought he had a decent match against West Brom even though he didn't score. He didn't have a lot of chances against Chelsea, although, yes, he should have scored in Hungary. I'm not so concerned about his lack of goals at this point... I don't think the 4-5-1 system does him any favours. I'm more concerned that he seems to be getting really frustrated playing as a lone striker and how that frustration might show itself on the pitch (like when he took that ball that was meant for Giggs).

Anyway, I'm not trying to single out Phil for criticism because, yes, everybody makes mistakes. I just think he's a much better player than what he's shown recently.

The problem is: Its all very well to criticise some of our defenders, Phil & Mickey but who in all honesty are we going to replace them with. There are some great full backs around, Zanetti, Carlos, Thuram etc but we don't have the money at the moment to replace them. We just need to get behind our players and hope they hit a good run of form

Thats why you should never be a defender or a GK. One mistake and its never forgotten. A forward can play crap but all is forgiven if he scores a goal.

Spot on. RVN is passing hell again as last season. Running his socks off and always with his back to goal. Anyone who's played some footy knows it can kill a strikers' confidence - so put on OLE - and RVN will deliver.

Well....you hit the nail on the head there mate! It's all nice and dandy to critique everyone on the team, especially the defenders when they have a bad game. If Phil is a 4th or 5th string player, then that's what's going to happen to him when he's on the pitch. He'll get mixed up and forget the assignments, plus he's not used to plying with the 1st team. But, if he's playing in the reserves, then there's no excuse for a bad form. Especiallly playing in a UNITED uniform! You are playing for the most prestigious club in the world. Same with Blanc.....he had to get used to playing with our guys, get used to the pace of the game etc...etc....To be honest with you I really never cared for the Neville's. If they came up with Beckham....they should be at the same greatness and a club leader. They are not and never will live up to thier expectations. I really didn't think Blanc was the answer either, but he has shown some greatness lately and is coming around this season. When Rio gets healthy, he and O'shea will be a lethal combo in the back. Hopefully that will compliment Blanc and he'll be able to show what he came here to do. He'll be a great coach when he retires, maybe he'll stay with United. Let's hope so. Everyone makes mistakes in there time and no one is perfect. All of us are so used to winning that sometimes we take the losing for granted and start running our mouths. No one ecepts losing, but that's part of the game. It also easy for us to be the armchair coach and run the club as we see fit. I don't always agree with SAF's decisions either. But he's the man! I really think that we need to stick with the 4-4-2 though...IMO!!!!!!! That formation has won alot of games and we should not fix what's not broken!

Everyone else though that has spoken about players slagging off and not commiting themsleves. Those players know who they are as I'm sure SAF know's too. So it's time to put up and show the world what your made of or move on. When you play for a club like UNITED......you are in the spotlight from day one and you need to shine! So..........let's get behind our men and support them and SAF. Maybe our form will start to turn in our favor and we can then steamroll through the CL and the EPL and get back our SILVERWARE that is rightfully ours!!!!!!!!!!!

GLORY GLORY MAN UNITED.........

This mistake aside, PN just doesn't look the part. His passing is poor, he is regularly caught out of position, and he is prone to errors.

A couple of the defenders are going through a bad time at the moment. The constant changes in formation are helping though. The midfield is being changed almost week to week. This is putting them under pressure, they are struggling and as a result are not being able to control the middle of the park. This in turn means our defense is under more strain. We need to settle in to a regular formation and start to control the game from midfield like we did when we were sweeping all before us.
My preference is 4-4-2, a lot of people have said that this can be too rigid, but we played 4-4-2 when we won the double in 1994, with possibly the best attacking and most exciting side we've had under SAF.

Phil Neville gets enough stick from outsiders. How about we give him a chance to settle & back him for a bit.
People tend to forget he did a sterling job last year at RB when he had a decent run, even scored a couple of crackers.

I disagree. He played some stinkers against better opposition meaning he's not good enough to make a crack at the next level.

Which is why he is NEVER first choice.

Right. So if we put Giggs on the market tommorow we would get say 20m and if we put PN on we would get maybe 4m.
