England spinner Ashley Giles is a doubt for the forthcoming tour of India after his recovery from hip surgery stalled.
Giles, 32, struggled with the long-term problem in Pakistan late last year and had to return home early.
"Ashley hasn't made the progress that we'd want him to make and he's got some concerns that we share," said England's chief medical officer Peter Gregory.
"Before we start to push him too hard we thought it sensible to seek a further opinion from the specialist."
An England and Wales Cricket Board spokesman told BBC Sport: "Ashley has not been able to resume bowling as yet and he did see a specialist in London on Tuesday in connection with his hip injury.
"We need to digest the findings of his report and the chief medical officer's report before making any further comment."
Giles was operated on early in December and was initially optimistic about making the India tour.
England depart for Mumbai (Bombay) on 12 February and have two warm-up matches before the first Test begins in Nagpur on 1 March.
The selectors have delayed naming the 16th member of the tour squad until they know whether Giles will be fit.
If he is not, then two spinners out of Ian Blackwell, Monty Panesar and Alex Loudon are likely to go on tour to accompany Shaun Udal.
But if he is fit, just one of them will get the call. England will check the fitness of the whole touring party, including captain Michael Vaughan who has undergone knee surgery, before they depart.
