That makes it Warne, McGrath, Langer and Gilchrist that have gone in the last year. Surely Hayden can't be too far away.

Will the Aussies finally become a normal team that can be beaten?

Well all the players thay have brought in thus far, would have an extremely good case to get in our (England's) top order.
So i'm not too optimistic about 2009.

I don't see them dropping to the same levels as England, India, Pakistan, and South Africa but I do feel they will become less consistent than they have been.

They will still dominate though, they have been at the top for a long time going back past the Waugh brothers - the fact is they will produce someone to step in as if they haven't done already.

Every team has people retiring though just look at India who will loose their 3 big batsmen over the next few years and the likes of Kumble. Pakistan have lost Inzy and the likes of Yousuf and Younis aren't getting any younger plus Shoaib hasn't even been rewarded a new contract. England can have a decent first 11 but fall a bit short after that - too reliant on the likes of Flintoff, KP, and Vaughan's captaincy.

Can always hope.

Gilchrist's replacement is probably an improvement based on current form - with both gloves and bat.

Gilchrist has changed the role. In the past a good keeper could average very little with the bat and still be assured of their place. this is no longer good enough.

Nice man n'all.

He'll be missed for sure, but I rememebr thinking Healey would be hard to replace. Brad Hadon's haveing a pretty good season with the bat and his keeping is improving so he'll step in quite nicely I think.
Gilly lost it wearing pink gloves, the fag.

revolutionised the game and invented the term wicket keeper batsman. There was a time in the world where he was the best in the world at both, however he fell away in the last couple of years. Great cricketer and decent bloke, however that whole "I'll walk if I know I've knicked it" was utter rubbish.

Great player and a genuine loss to world cricket.

His retirement by itself is not going to affect the Australian team as much but (hopefully) its one more straw on the camel's back. It'll be a great feeling to get the Australians 5 down for under 200 and not see one of the great test batsmen of our time walking in.

Fantastic guy.I had the good fortune of meeting him in Sri Lanka when the Aussie team was touring in 2004...very warm and friendly.Easily the most likeable player out of that team, aside from maybe Lee and Bevan.

He's easily the best wicketkeeper batsman I've seen in the game...untouchable when he got going.

Great player, great person. Best WK/batsmen ever. Wish him all the best

The WK that will most likely replace him is Brad Haddin. He is a good WK, and very capable batsmen. I think the gap between him and Gilchrist (based on past ~2yrs form) is much much smaller than between Hogg and Warne..

Hogg is fecking shit compared most capable spin bowlers, let a lone Shane Warne.

Come back Warney. I'm begging you.
