Giggs...

I made a thread on Hollowman in 07-08 but I can't find it so I'll start here.

From about 06-07 I was introduced to Giggs, although at the time he was just Hollowman - Giggs was a nickname given for him because he used to giggle a lot, which later became more marketable then Hollowman. Back then he wasn't doing tapes, but features of Mykall Million and others, eventually leading to a series of under-promoted mixtapes that showed promise, but were far from the quality he gave later. I remember when I heard him on Hollowman meets Blade and being very impressed at the leaps and bounds he had come on. His monotone voice and flow was the same, but with better lyrics then anyone was bringing at the time.

He's different now, and increased exposure has made him bring his content down a little to cater for a bigger audience, but he's still good. Production wise, off the new tape 'Take Your Hats Off' it's virtually the same. I can't help but feel he's perfected his craft, and given his latest release is a Whoo Kid product, he might be able to breakthrough to America.

I used to prefer the rawer Hollowman, very cold, dark lyrics that had a bit more focus and a better range of production, even if it was gutter music. But if you know the rapper, you know he's not one to make up his past, and glamourize a lifestyle he never lived. Still, he's here, half a decade later and hasn't changed too much. Albeit a few more chick songs, but it's to be expected after the success of Talking the Hardest, and tracks like Monster are more listenable for me.

I thought years ago that by this time, he would have been far bigger then he is now, I wonder if it will be the same situation in 5 years, although I suppose the progress he has made is quite remarkable given his content? He would have hit America by then, his sound will be taken up over there, I'm sure of it. One thing I can say without doubt is that in 5 years Joe Grind will still be shit, and living off of him.

Giggs, the Uk artist, another name he used to use was Hollowman.

'Look what the cat dragged in'.. same guy?

...but with better lyrics then anyone was bringing at the time..

For someone with such an extensive and knowledgable love/taste for US rap/hip hop/lyricism, you've got an incredibly weak/narrow one of the UK variety....IMO of course.

He's alright. Nothing amazingly special and certainly not with better lyrics than anyone was bringing at the time, unless you were listening to exclusively to that release..

There's already a thread on him. Liking his stuff although I think "take your hats off" is a bit hit and miss.

Introduced him to a mate of mine in America and he loves him. Sent over an SN1 shirt.

Nah, it's not narrow at all, just selective, and of course misposted.

It was my mistake, okay he obviously is not the best lyrical artist in the UK and never has been close to it, I have friends who are better lyricists then him all day long, yes there are plenty of better wordsmiths then him. I meant on a personal level, I loved his lyrics back then, they were darker. Also, which looking back should have been included it the OP - was that I meant on the Mykal Million and Limelight tapes especially and during that period where both were releasing shitloads of mixtapes that all the usual suspects feautured on, he was the best there.

I love Giggs because his music makes me feel different, similar to that of Triple 6 Mafia (Not Three Six Mafia, they are now shit and have been for near a decade), where their lyrics were generally ridiculous, and at best bad, but the production, their style and the anger in their music was incredible, it's hard to put into words why I have such a deep connection for Triple 6, I am all about the lyrics, but there's something about their music that makes me not care, or at least forget. Give me an instrumental album of theirs anyday though. My friends and people who know me can't fathom why I like that sort of stuff, given it's only about 2gb of a huge collection, the rest being normal hip-hop.

But, I do, and there's definitely elements of that with Giggs which is worse really given he isn't responsible for the production of his music, although lyrically he is like Rakim compared to Triple 6 Mafia.

Alot of my friends love Giggs, always posting videos of his up on youtube. I think he's quite well liked in the Manchester scene, which is strange considering I've hardly even given him the time of day.

Giggs is quality, walk in da park is a cracking album, hes miles better than all the other uk artists getting airplay (pro green, chipmunk, tinchy, tinie tempah, example)

Shame his voice, lyrical content and reputation with the police (operation trident) have held him back a bit commercially

Yeah Trident have been pretty cold towards Giggs, although given his past and what his music does to people, you expect something. Still, cancelling his shows and calling up record labels to warn them of his past crimes and the effect of his music is too far, he's obviously turned his life around somewhat for the better, or is trying to.

Hes certainly had to work harder than other artists, good on xl for having the balls to take a chance on him
