MAN UTD CHIEF 'CAUGHT IN LADIES LOO'
EXCLUSIVE
By Jan Disley

MARTIN Edwards' alleged Peeping Tom act in a ladies' loo left a woman "very distressed", it was claimed last night.

Edwards, former Manchester United chairman and chief executive, is said to have peered under a toilet cubicle at a health club.

The woman, who was in the lavatory at the time, complained to staff.

A source said: "Apparently Edwards just walked past the health club reception desk and straight into the ladies toilets. They are round a corner and quite hidden away with the gents next door. The woman, who was in her 40s, was very distressed."

Dad of two Edwards, who is also a non-executive director of Man Utd Plc, voluntarily attended a police station where he was questioned. A file is being prepared for crown prosecutors .

Asked about the matter yesterday, he said: "I have nothing at all to say." The 57-year-old millionaire, who has been linked with a number of women, later left his £900,000 home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, in a taxi.

Yesterday's claims centre round four-star Mottram Hall, near Prestbury, Cheshire, which is regularly used by United players.

The hotel has a private club open to guests and members who pay around £500 a year plus a joining fee. Facilities at the 132-bedroom, 18th century hotel include a pool and gym. The one-cubicle toilet in the alleged incident is in the foyer. There is a panic button for emergencies.

It is not clear whether Edwards is a paid-up member. The source said: "He is quite a regular visitor."

Owners De Vere Hotel Group said yesterday: "Police are investigating allegations of a Peeping Tom incident at Mottram Hall.

"We treat allegations such as this very seriously and are helping police with their inquiries. While the investigation is taking place, we cannot comment further."

Edwards has been married to wife Sue for more than 30 years and has two grown-up children James and Lucy. But his private life has been dogged by controversy.

In 1990 Caroline Wyke, 26, allegedly demanded £100,000 to keep their relationship secret. Edwards was also linked with former BBC newsreader Lynette Lithgow who was murdered last year in the Caribbean. A man named David Egard is accused of her death.

Four years ago, the Mirror told how Edwards spent the night with prostitute Maria Elves, 35, in Rio de Janeiro. He met the vice girl when United took part in FIFA's first World Club Championships in Brazil.

The soccer chief rowed with hotel staff before taking her to his room, then smuggled her out a back door. Later, twisting her name, he denied any affair with "Maria Alvarez".

Angry shareholders protested he had tarnished the club's image.

But Independent Supporters' Club spokesman Andy Walsh said: "Martin Edwards goes round the world laying it about. That's not news - that's to be expected."

Police said: "We confirm a 57-year-old man attended Wilmslow police station voluntarily, not under arrest, concerning an allegation of improper behaviour at Mottram Hall on Saturday, August 17."
