Michael Caine is fecking immense in this...a snarling, cold, irredeemable villain who doesn't piss about with shooters like yanks. Naaah...he smashes your face in and throws you off a building or knifes you while you beg for mercy, or splits your head apart with a shotgun instead of taking the easy way and unloading it on yer.

Bleak, dirty, seedy landscapes and a cast of scummy bastards who thrive on sex and violence.

Couldn't agree more.

One of the starkest, most gut-wrenchingly abrupt endings I've ever seen too. As always with that sort of ending, I didn't want it to happen but its a huge factor in making the film so unforgettable. Likewise for Dead Man's Shoes.
