I mean don't get me wrong, of course I appreciate it's subtle beauty and rich cultural offerings, but those were probably lost on most foreign fans and they did seem to mess up the public transport logistics pretty badly.

So since most games are usually held in more classical tourist destinations I struggle to come up with an alternative.

I've never been to Gelsenkirchen. But this city is called after annoying little insects and symbols of Christian power and is located in the heart of the Ruhrpott. So yes, its probably one of the worst cities.
