Gears of War 2 has blasted its way to the top of the UK chart while LittleBigPlanet managed fourth behind FIFA 09 and Fallout 3.

Elsewhere in the top ten, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 clotheslined its way to fifth, followed by Professor Layton and the Curious Village at sixth.

However, 7th November was a big Friday for new releases so there were inevitably going to be losers, and an eye cast further down the chart reveals MotorStorm: Pacific Rift and Tom Clancy's EndWar languishing in 29th and 30th respectively.

Data compiler Chart-Track reports that Gears 2's first-week sales were the third-highest ever on Xbox 360 behind GTA IV and Halo 3, and the eighth-highest for any game ever.

Meanwhile, sales for FIFA 09 dipped by one per cent, while Fallout 3's drop-off was 42 per cent, enough to remove it from first to third. Sony won't be happy that even with that kind of decline ahead of it, LittleBigPlanet managed only fourth.

Finally, Guitar Hero World Tour pops up for its first week at 17th, although it's worth remembering that it was only the guitar-and-game and solus disc versions that launched last week, with the big instruments bundles set to go on 14th November. Will it emulate Guitar Hero III's sterling sales? We shall see.

01. Gears of War 2 (Xbox 360)
02. FIFA 09 (PC, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, DS)
03. Fallout 3 (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)
04. LittleBigPlanet (PS3)
05. WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PSP, DS, PS2)
06. Professor Layton and the Curious Village (DS)
07. Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
08. Quantum of Solace (PC, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, DS)
09. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)
10. Wii Fit (Wii)

Quite disappointing for Sony I would say, considering all the marketing that has gone into LBP and the fact it had a couple of days head-start, to be behind 3 games wouldn't have been the result they were looking for.

Still, early days yet.

Also, "only fourth" is a silly statement here, as that's a multiplatform chart (Fallout for example has shipped 5 million copies Worldwide - that's a lot). Gears was always going to sell more anyway, especially 1st week, as it's an established IP, and there are more XB360s in UK than PS3s.

That's a fair point, LBP is a game I would expect to increase in sales as the weeks go by, I'll be picking up my copy at the end of the month.

The trouble with Europe is that you can never get the numbers, but LBP sold around 50,000 first week in Japan (although MGS4 did almost half a million in its fist week - second that week was around 40,000), which is not something to sniff at. We might get the first week numbers of LBP in the NPD at the end of the week.

Should get the UK individual format chart later today though.

If Gears gets topped by a feckin sock puppet I will be sorely disappointed

We got 4 copies of Little Big Planet on release, and 12 today, almost a week later.

I'd say there were definately supply issues.

It did well (LBP) considering it wasn't released in the US until October 28th.

It seems to be having some legs does LBP, at least in the UK. It started at 2nd in the individual formats, dropped to about 16th, last week was 6th, this week it's 8th and has outsold Gears of War 2 two weeks in a row. Yes, I know that it hasn't sold anywhere near Gears of War 2 numbers (which is a game that will have a lot of sales in terms of percentage stacked in its first week), but I think that this is the first time that we have seen an exclusive PS3 title that has legs.

The price of it has probably helped, I've seen it for £20 at a few places recently - cheap for a new game on the ps3 with a bit of hype around it and its a game that parents will buy for their kids this christmas. (LBP)

FIFA is doing well isn't it, and no sign of Pro Evo. I can't believe how they are allowed to release World at War and have it retailing at around £40 either. Talk about brand power...

It's behaving like a Nintendo game, one for the kids, they always sell long.

I wasn't going to get LBP but the Metal Gear trailer convinced me, should be getting it tomorrow. If they can keep providing additional content like that I can see the game having legs.

It was discounted at certain places for a while I believe, but must have gone back up in price as it's even higher in the value chart (money taken) than in the units sold chart.

Yes, Pro Evo as a series could be in trouble, as it is nowhere to be seen (well 26th all formats). FIFA is top of the all formats chart, and thus Christmas #1, with COD:WaW second.

I swear I recall reading somewhere that ps3 units sold in the UK have outnumbered those of the 360?

PS3 apparently did overtake the XB360 in units sold in Europe as a whole, but never overtook XB360 in the UK. With the price drops, Microsoft are saying that they now have the lead in Europe as a whole again. UK is a very important market, making up around 30% of the European total.

30%

Understandable though, everyone else just plays World of Warcraft.

Yes, I'd say about 30%, could be a little less when you add up all the smaller countries.... Certainly not lower than 25%.

In 2007 interactive software sales in nine of the major European markets* reached an approximate total of €7.3 billion. These figures represent games software alone (i.e. the games themselves, excluding the revenue generated by sales of hardware). The UK alone represented €2.3 billion in revenue, followed by France (€1.6bn), Germany (€1.4bn), Spain (€0.7bn) and Italy €0.6bn).

* Based on GFK data out of GFK sales and consumer panels 2007 for the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherlands and Switzerland, as well as data provided by the Swedish and Finnish ISFE member organizations.
