Weaste brought this up in the Jermaine Stewart (RIP One United One Love Gone Too Soon) thread, and it is worth considering.
What decade is the gayest of the last 100 years?
The 00s have all sorts of gay things like emos and such. But this is balanced out somewhat by the abundance of cheap downloadable porn.
The 90s had very little gayness, or at least it seemed that way at the time. In retrospect perhaps the whole 'grunge' thing was a bit gay. Perhaps lesbian is a better way to describe the 1990s.
The 80s are a prime contender - music stars all ended up gay, the birth of long haired makeup wearing heavy metal artists, neon tube socks, jelly shoes, Wham!, the list goes on.
The 70s were the birth of gay - Elton John, Queen (as if that wasn't a massive giveaway, folks), avocado green kitchen appliances, Graeme Souness, chest wigs, etc.
The 60s were clearly not gay - the absolute height of modern culture and the peak of human artistic achievement.
The 50s weren't gay because if one was gay one was burnt at the stake.
The 40s were a bit gay, what with Hitler and all.
The 30s were gay-ish with some very crap and odd literature coming out (see what I did there), although the Big Band era began then, which may save it from bending too much.
The 20s were perhaps a bit queer - women with no tits, the birth of modern science fiction, but on the plus we got radio.
The 10s were clearly extremely gay. Men dying for half a decade because of an Arch Duke. God forbid if they had killed a Camp Count.
