Sunderland sign Kelly from Leeds

Chris Taylor

The Guardian

Sunderland will make Gary Kelly their latest summer signing as Peter Reid reshapes his side after a season spent battling against relegation.
The £4m-rated Leeds United full-back has agreed a move to the Stadium of Light and will finalise the deal after the Republic of Ireland's World Cup campaign.

Reid, who has been monitoring the 27-year-old since early last season, has already snared Kelly's compatriot Phil Babb from Sporting Lisbon and is confident of adding at least two more new faces before the start of next season.

Kelly's arrival will pave the way for the England Under-21 defender Darren Williams to move to Birmingham City in a £2m deal.

Good luck Gary...and thanks for the last 11 years.

ucking 'ell, you won't have any players left come the start of the season:

Bowyer to the dippers
Ferdinand to us
Kelly to Sunderland
Kewell to Italy
Fat bloke Viduka to Spain

It has come about because Mills has made the right back role his own...Kells has been at the club since Sept 1991 and has been a great servant. He cost us nothing and maybe it's time to cash in on him, it probably is a good move for him too.

It also maybe a load of bollox.....<a href="http://www.leedsunited.com/lufcnews.asp?article=94630" target="_blank">Kelly move denied</a>

Please explain the addition of "...or maybe not" to your thread title marching.

As it appears there has been no bid for Kelly he "maybe not" going to the SMB's.

Clear now?

So you jumped the gun in posting papertalk whilst adding a fond farewell to your right back then? Is that what you mean? ;)

Well, all hope is not lost for Leeds. If they behave themselfs they can still get a UEFA spot just like Ipswich after next season. Intertoto is the other option.

Please tell me you are not as Dim as your name and this post suggests <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" />

It may be worth Leeds hanging on to Kelly, so that Mills can move into the centre to replace the departing Rio..

;)

O'Dreary said that Danny Mills may be sold if he doesn't control his temper, but Mills countered:

"The examples of Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger - arguably the best two managers in the country - should be noted. It is very rare they comment on what their players do. Some things should be kept in-house. Sometimes saying the hunger has gone is an easy way to paper over the cracks. I have my own ideas where the problems are."

So I wouldn't be surprised if Mills left too - will they have any defenders left?
