Has any other national or club team ever wasted as much time/resources on someone who had

A) no top level pedigree - relegating Middlesbrough was his his only pedigree in football

B) no top level talent/ability to potentially be something special

C) even a nostalgia/romance factor - like Maradona for Argentina. Southgate was a bang average player who was poorer than a lot of the players he's ended up managing for England.

Haha…spoke too soon. I predict that England will go to the final or the Euros this time.

Of course they have. Domenech's maybe the most obvious example. At least Southgate has generally been good at managing the atmosphere around his squad.

Pretty much, even if he lucks his way to the title it wouldn't change my opinion.

Seems like a decent fella but woefully out of his depth.

No  In what world does he come out of this with any credit.
‘He never lost belief and stuck with Kane’. The fans won’t forget but the media will love him if England pull this off.

He definitely will, logic be damned.
I really don’t think that’s the case at all. There will be massive conversations about how he’s setting the team up after this. I’m shocked you even think otherwise.

He is a terrible manager. He could go for 3-1 easily with the players he has, now shitting his pants against a dead Slovakia side.

Once they attacked, they scored. Far too negative and passive

This is so bad. The very worse of him to be honest, and I was always sympathetic, but no idea how you can have that turnaround and see a side so gassed in front of you, and not want a third, even to just buy yourself time and look more emphatic.

How he has managed to hand over impetus yet again is so so silly and makes him look ridiculous.

Yeah, he’s had a ridiculously easy ride from the media for years now. Always been a terrible manager.

Have to say, there has been a semblance of criticism this year at least. Still should be much worse.

Masterclass in giving a crap team hope when they’re mentally shattered; send on Conor Gallagher
