The 22-year-old is rated as one of the hottest properties in South America having broken into the Santos first-team in 2008, and established himself as a strong, agile and technical playmaker.

He has since been watched by clubs from all over Europe, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City, while AC Milan have had two separate bids rejected recent in recent years, as Santos battle to keep hold of the pass-master.

However, their grip on Ganso appears to be loosening, after he snubbed the club's latest contract offer over the weekend, clearing the way for a move away from Brazil.

Ganso is said to have turned down a three-year extension to his current terms that would boost his wages to £70,000-a-week, with the star insisting the club need to offer closer to £150,000-a-week if they wish to keep him.

Santos are unlikely to be able to match his demands, as they are already paying one huge salary - that of superstar forward Neymar - which they needed help from sponsors to be able to fund.

That clears the way for Ganso to finally get his dream move to Europe, with United and the Blues leading the race.

Both clubs are chasing a big name central midfielder this summer, but agreeing a fee with Santos will be tricky, especially as they've always maintained he will only be sold for his buyout fee, which currently sits at £50 million.

United could bridge the gap by sending flop Anderson the other way on loan, while Chelsea are willing to offer Santos a partnership deal, that would see the two sides exchange coaching methods.

Ganso is currently contracted to Santos until 2015.

wow 50 mill for him, too much money. from the matches i have seen, which arent much, i thought he played better than Neymar. he will probably end up at madrid

"Sending flop Anderson the other way on loan"

In all seriousness, he's a very talented lad, I'd rate him higher than Neymar, seems to more in his locker for actually being able to succeed at a top European club. But we have a rather poor record when it comes to Brazilian midfielders. Can't see it happening.

There's already a Ganso thread out there.

I think it is questionable how well he would adapt to the Premier League. He has gone missing for Brazil on occasion.

He won't leave before the world cup, same as Neymar, and most of the rest of that lot.

He's nailed on for Italy, would be massive there. Suits him down to a tee.

What does he have in his locker that Neymar doesn't? Just curious..

A rocket of a shot from range, a better passing range and plenty more vision. Goes without saying really does it not? Neymar's the best forward in Brazil, Ganso's the best #10 - obviously Ganso's passing game is going to be better.

Lovely player. I really like him. 2 years ago I wish we'd bought him.

Forget the price though and look at his injury record. He's another Anderson waiting to happen!

No chance!

If they had sold him a couple of years ago they would have made at least triple that amount.

Time for him to prove you right.

Great player before two serious knee injuries. Once was seen as a better prospect than Neymar. It is a shame but he will never regain the form tgat he once had.
