I've been exclusively a console gamer for a while but I used to play PC games a while back. I'm looking to get a gaming PC, preferably with twice the power/graphics of current consoles. Are there any you guys would recommend, what sort of price range would I be looking at and is the visual difference worth me splashing out (my parents are going to pay a good chunk of it as my birthday is coming up this month but anything over £700 and I'll have to make up the difference)?

Build one yourself, its not all that difficult and is much cheaper in the long run. £700-850 is a decent budget too.

If you aren't confident in building your own system however then the likes of Overclockers UK and Aria PC - Computer Hardware, Components, Monitors.. at lowest prices both do weekly deals where you can sometimes pick up more powerful computers at reduced rates to fit into your budget. I got a system from overclockers recently and even though it isn't currently the most powerful the motherboard they installed at least lets me upgrade my processor up to a 6 core AMD in the future if i wanted to, manufacturers like Dell and other similar mass places don't give you that option in a prebuilt system normally.

tbh building one and getting a superpowered prebuilt from some companies isn't that much of a price difference anymore. if you watch hotukdeals you might see one cheaper than you'd pay for it building it, although thats mostly dell, so you'd have a ton of shit pre-installed....when i got one for my dad, i just deleted it and clean installed windows.

If you have the time, building one yourself is much better IMO. The effort put that you put in to research and build it really sets it apart personally from just paying for a prebuilt one upfront. Plus, DIY is a positive educational experience as well.

Assuming you're building it yourself and you already have a monitor 700 pounds is plenty for a quality system.

An I5 2600k processor is what you should be looking for if it's just for gaming. GTX 570 GPU. 600-700w power supply. 8GB is more than enough ram. Make sure you do your research when picking a motherboard because it's pretty important when it comes to upgrading.

Overclockers Australia Forums

They give pretty good advice on there. It's in Aus dollars but 700 pounds=1100 aus dollars.

You don't even NEED that heavy a system anymore. I wanted to make a full HD system for my monster of a TV. I already had a good PSU and case from before. The rest cost me €450 (so around £400 ? ) and I can run The Witcher 2 on Ultra no problem.

Though Pixmania were doing a 5850 Xtreme for half price at the time, around 100 quid. Overclock that and a Phenom II x4 (easy to do if you've good cooling) and you're sorted.

Thing is, PC games just aren't really ahead of console games anymore, because the market has expanded so much and games on a PC are pirated to shreds by anyone with a clue about torrents etc, therefore they're kept almost graphically at the same level as the PS3/360.

EDIT: And yes, for feck sake build your own one. It's easy and there are loads of guides online for doing it. Just make sure you get the right matching components.
