Tyrone lead GAA All Star nominations

Wednesday, October 12

The Vodafone GAA All Star nominations have been announced and All-Ireland winners Tyrone are, predictably, leading the bunch with 11 nominations in all.

Red Hand talisman Peter Canavan, who announced his retirement earlier this month, is nominated to receive the fifth All Star of his career. He is joined by teammates Brian Dooher, Owen Mulligan and Ryan McMenamin among others.

Their All-Ireland opponents Kerry received eight nominations, as did Ulster rivals Armagh, with Dublin next on the list with six nods. Cork and Laois received three nominations apiece, Derry and Galway two and Monaghan's Thomas Freeman secured recognition for his fantastic year in the Farney forward line. Cavan goalkeeper James Reilly is also included on the list after his fine season.

Just five of last year's All Stars selection - Diarmuid Murphy, Michael McCarthy, Tomas O Se, Sean Kavanagh and Colm Cooper - are nominated this year, while Kerry have the distinction of having their three Ventry brothers - Tomas, Marc and Darragh O Se - all receiving nominations.

The winners will be announced on November 23 and the awards will be presented at the All Star gala banquet on Friday, November 25, at Dublin's City West hotel. The hurling nominations will be announced on Thursday and the winners will be announced live on TV at the banquet.

The full list of nominations for the Vodafone GAA Football All Stars is as follows:

I'll go for;
1. Murphy
2. M O'Se
3. MCCarthy
4. McMenamin
5. Kernan
6. Lynch
7. Jordan
8. Cavanagh
9. Whelan
10. Dooher
11. McGuigan
12. Mulligan
13. McDonnell
14. O'Neill
15. Cooper

The keeper is the only one I would have a doubt about, otherwise I think the rest are worthy Allstars for 2005.

Diarmuid Murphy is the outstanding keeper in the country at the moment, there's no question about his All-Star. I wouldn't have McMenamin in my side, Cooper, Mulligan, O'Neill is a dream forward line, and midfield would be a case of getting someone to partner Sean Cavanagh. Other certainties are Aaron Kernan and Marc and Thomas O'Se.

It's all opinions I suppose for the rest of the places...you'd be hard pressed to look past a lot of the Tyrone players though.

McMenamin wouldn't be my favourite type of player, he's dirty in a very sly way,
but he's a very effective player and probably deserves the all star, I'd go along with most of Klebersomeone's list but would probably pick a different Dublin player other than Whelan who just cant seem to do it for the full 70 minutes, perhaps Griffen or Cullen instead.
