Who are some fullbacks that United might look at signing to add depth? Post veterans and youngsters.

Also, can someone give me details on these four youth players?

Alan Tate
Mark Lynch
Lee Roche
Danny Pugh

i think tierney is a great prospect from our youth setup for fb, currently on loan at.. crewe i think? stevey carr looks good after his injury but finnan has been terrible in recent months, players going past him as if he weren't there. that's the paddy update anyway

West Ham right back.Johnston? Somthing like that, if they go down we should grab him, he goes alright and he's young.

Tate was on loan with Swansea, has done well there, but he's a CB and I think he has a bit of promise about him - he usually played better than May for the reserves. Lynch you saw in the CL, a steady eddy, not great at attacking and not blessed with pace but a good defender and reliable like Irwin. Roche can play CB or left back, like Pugh, and I rate neither, I think we'll get try and sell one or both of them this summer. In the FA Youth Cup winning team ( as feck) we have Lawrence and Simms as full backs, and both are excellent prospects.

Soccernet.com reported that both Bellion and Escude are available on free transfers and may join United. It mentioned how SAF has admired the two and tried to sign them last summer.

Rennes must be feeling like complete morons for holding out for that few grand more when we came calling earlier on in the season. :p

anyone seen escude play before?
how good is he?</strong><hr></blockquote>

I assume our repeated interest in him means he's a bit of alright...

He's France's U21 star, and Alex never really gave up him, so I would certainly not be surprised if we completed the deal this summer - if he's on a free, then that is very canny from Alex.

If he came - and with the wages he'd be demanding - he'd be first-choice.

I think many forget he is primarily a left-back - we have two of real class already.

Well, thats the question isn't it - was he thought of as backup to Silvestre or a replacement? And where is O'Shea going to end up? With Mickey, O'Shea and Phil all capable of playing there it does seem to not be so in need of strengthening now, while the right back spot perhaps needs strengthening - what kind of season did that Argie right back have that we were after?

He is a RB, correct? So he would push Gazza out of the picture?</strong><hr></blockquote>

Probably - IF he came. Only one season though imo.

I think this talk of Escude came before the dramatic impact of O'Shea. No-one could have foreseen the rise he'd make, and it's changed things big time.

Right-back we definately need re-assessing over left-back. Burdisso (Boca right-back you speak of) can also play centre-back. I havent seen him much, but from all accounts he's been steady but not making waves.

Probably Carr would be better suited. I heard Babbel's on a free. ;)

The problem with people talking about O'Shea and Silvestre as leftbacks is strange IMO, as to my eyes they are both far more suited to the centre, and in the case of O'Shea, the centre of midfield in the future. We are seriously weak in the fullback positions (yes we have plenty that can do it, but they are only cover IMO. We need specialists to play there) and we need to buy. Escude is a fullback, and I've seen him play both right and left. He's the one I'd go for.

I checked on that, his contract runs to June 2005. So there will be a fee involved.

You don't think that O'Shea will be effective on the left with his crosses? A few improvements on the tackling (nothing wrong now but) side and we have a super roberto carlos.

Eh!!??? Whats wrong with Gary Neville? He's a red through and through, a good defender and is good attacking with Becks down the right! What would be the point in signing a right back??? I think Sir Alex agrees with me!

yeah..u r right..

Position: LB Nationality: France
Date of Birth: 17/08/1979
Place of Birth: Chartres, France
Height: 183 cm Weight: 79 kg
International honours: U21 international caps
Contract Expiry: 06/2005

The fullback is never a priorty for us. Fergie has already said that the difference between us and Real is that we lack the experience at the back, so I believe we are going to look for an experienced CB. And then we also need to get one or two attacking players up front and may be a new goalkeeper, which mean we are quite unlikely to go for a full back this summer.

With Gaz and Brown on the right and O Shea and Silvestre on the left (backed by tierney and Phil) I cannot see the need of new fullbacks

What we need is a powerful and charismatic Stam type defender who would link well with Rio.
