Awesome song - it's usually the first song on any driving play list I make when I have to make any length of journey. It is also used as one of the best pieces of film scoring I can think of, the whole thing soundtracks the last 10 minutes of Devils Rejects and the visuals fit the music perfectly.
I still love Sweet Home Alabama though, if nothing else for the context it was written in. It is a direct reply to the two songs the Neil Young wrote called 'Alabama' and 'Southern Man' which were both anti US south in tone.

BTW, when I say I love the song, I don't mean I'm some racist red-neck dick who thinks Young 'Shoulda oughta kept his nose outta the south business', I mean I love all three songs and the piece of musical history they represent.
Played this (the full 10:19 version) at a school show once. Was amazing watching the teachers continually tell us to wrap it up.. I even had time to play a little bass solo, (which was adapted from an olf Cliff Burton riff).

Weird. I was playing bass along with this today myself having heard the song for the first time. The chord structure is so easy you can improvise bass fills all over the shop.

I've heard it, just playing in the background and stuff, but never sat down or listened to it properly. In fact I'm not sure I've heard Sweet Home Alabama in full either, except maybe on some BBC show Skynyrd were playing on.
Great song, but they were far from a two song band. Simple Man, Coming Home and Tuesday`s Gone to name but a few are all storming examples of how good they were.
I love this song. Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama are two of my all-time favourite songs.
