Free text based PC games

Has anyone played one before? I recently watched an episode of the Big Bang theory and noticed Sheldon playing one. Ever since then, I have been wanting to play one.

Tried googling but to no avail so far. Wondering if any of you have played such games and know where I can free text based games online?
