Don't know how solid this source is but Spurs apparently in for him. Did Barcelona only sign him on a free to flip him over for a profit?

With their debt? Most likely. If he turned out to be good enough to play for them than they would be happy, if he didnt make it than they sell him with a profit to an English club. Bit of a win win situation for them. His reputation is good enough that they would be able to sell him for some money and wont get stuck with him.

Not that much though because his salary would have been 9m per year and that’s not including agent and player fees. So let’s say total investment is 10m and will be sold for 15m. 5m profit? I guess if they want to sell to make profit, sell in January or summer not in 2024.

Looks like Barca been playing FM2005.

Was always an easy way to make a few extra pounds for the transfer kitty.

I think it's more of the player's thing because Xavi wants him in the squad.
And with the FFP that there are 15-20M does not give you to sign a substitute.

I remember when we played Milan and he looked quality. Think he’s like a ball winning midfielder type. Not what we need now we have Casemiro and even Fred who’s good at that role.

A physical ball winning midfielder is exactly what Spurs need(!). If Conte could I think he’d just play a ‘keeper, 9 variations of a physical midfielder and Harry Kane uptop

He was great against us in the Europa League against us 2 years ago. I raved about him for about 4 months after I first saw him.

Would be concerned anytime we play against him.

Another one of these hyped midfielders that are rank average.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind United taking a look at Kessie.

I never understood the logic of him going to Barcelona. He's not a Xavi type midfielder at all. However, thinking back to what he showed at Milan, he's strong, mobile, good with the ball and offers a decent goal threat.

I think Kessie next to Casemiro would bully a lot of Premier League midfields.

I agree

Yeah unfortunately we can't do loan for him

Yeah I actually think he'd be a good cheap option as midfield cover that wouldn't require us breaking the bank. We need to upgrade on McTominay no doubt if we want to challenge for trophies, right now we are fecked if Casemiro goes down

Yeah trouble is we are skint fc in this window

What Barcelona also does -- in addition to this -- is back-load the salaries for a player. Players do want to go their, its a dream of most guys, and Barca does use that shamelessly. "Of course you should get a marketable wage. 200k per week? No problem. But look you must agree to take 75k per week in actual wages, then the remaining 25m in wages will be paid out as loyalty fees with 8m in year 3, 8m in year 4 and 9m in year 5."

Barcelona always seem to be involved in disputes with players regarding these type of shady payments. And players desperately don't want to leave, because they will only start to get paid the real money late in their contracts. Or Barca promises to pay the loyalty money to a player even if they leave, to get the player to accept a transfer, and then they make a fuzz about paying that money when the player is out the door.

There was a great article in the Athletic a few months back or so about Barca's finances. So many of their up and coming young players are on horrible contracts in relation to their status in the sports. Barca can't afford to give them new deals, or wouldn't be allowed to register those deals under La Liga FFP rules, so they promise the kids money verbally and don't deliver. Alejandro Balde is making 3k a week for Barca. He is an established player. Played in the World Cup. That is just ridiculous.

Just don’t think he’s that good. Barca are probably disappointed the most.
Wasn´t he always just backup though?
Or did they ever think that this guy is better than Busquets, De Jong and Pedri?

Would be a major downgrade though, even at this stage Caicedo is better and has the potential to be one of the best in his position if he carries on developing the right way.
Kessie is good enough to play for the top 6 EPL clubs. He had experience with Milan and Barca, and only 26 year old. He probably won't cost more than 30m. It is a good alternative/back up plan.
