Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune is set to be offered a new four-year deal by the club.

Despite making a limited number of first-team appearances since joining United four years ago, Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to retain the services of the South African international.

Speaking in Cape Town, the United manager confirmed the 25-year old midfielder was still part of his plans.

"Quinton is still a developing player, but he is improving," said Ferguson. "He will be staying at United and we are about to offer him a new four-year contract."

South Africa can be proud of Quinton - he is a great ambassador for the country and a true professional.

Sir Alex Ferguson
Fortune was one of the few South African players who stood out at the World Cup, which may have prompted Ferguson to keep him.

Last season the midfielder was transfer-listed, and during the World Cup was linked with a move to a top J-League side.

"Quinton had a great World Cup for South Africa," said Ferguson. "Unfortunately he later picked up an injury and had to miss a few of our games.

"But he recently came on as a substitute against Olympiakos in a European Champions League game and was in the squad when we played Everton on Monday.

"South Africa can be proud of Quinton. He is a great ambassador for the country and a true professional. When I told him I was coming to Cape Town, he asked if he could come along with me!"

Ferguson is in South Africa to explore linking up with the Cape Town Football Academy and the Pretoria-based Tuks Soccer Academy, which is headed by former United goalkeeper Gary Bailey.

United were previously involved in a development programme with FC Fortune, a club co-owned by the player and his manager, Colin Gie.

Hes shown glimpses of being great player, especially in the latter CL games last season, (deportivo @ home). Hes only 25 so his best yrs are in front of him. Hes left footed and if hes prepared to fight for a place hes welcome to stay. A decent squad player.

Fergie said it best. Quinton is still a developing player. I'm delighted he's staying.

The Coaches and Sir Alex see something in him otherwise they wouldn't have appealed against his work permit refusal. Guess we have to go with them, they know best

Good news, the lad deserves another crack at breaking through into the first team.

Imagine Sir AF would have been lynched had he said, "Och, he's useless, and we can't wait to be rid of him" :)

The appointment of Carlos Quieroz can only be good for him.

He played well in a couple of matches last season, and then he was very impressive in the WC. Hope he can transfer that form to United. If he could play well in LW, we can even push Giggs up front to partner RVN, for I always think Giggs is more adaptable to the forward position than Scholes.

I think that's the REAL reason why he's got a new contract.........

emmm, I didn't really want to say that, but I imagine it would have helped. :D

There was a bit of skulduggery between Carlos and Jumo, seems that Quinton managed to stay neutral. :p

But I think he deserves a new contract, on merit.

Quinton could be a mixture of George Best and Ryan Giggs but if he is not given a first team run he will never develop.

This counts also for djordic and co

Good news Yes, but personally I think he should move on to a new club in England.Like Shaun Bartlett who is getting regular football at Charlton. Not wait till he's 30 and then move on.
