"It was the response we wanted definitely," said Fortune. "Every player individually wanted to do well and I think that was a small bit payback for the fans, which they deserved after Saturday's game against City.

"We all felt down after Maine Road and I think you saw that everyone worked hard in response."

Fortune admitted that United desperately needed a win to get back on track after last weekend’s Derby defeat.

"The fans suffered after Saturday - we all suffered,” Fortune said. “We wanted to do well for them. I hope it will bring a little bit of joy for the fans."

"It was strange being in central midfield," Quinton told the Manchester Evening News.

Fortune has operated in a variety of roles since joining the club in August 1999, but against Bayer Leverkusen, the boss asked him to shore up the centre of midfield.

"The gaffer asked me to do the job and I tried to do my best. Players like Roy Keane and Nicky Butt are important players but you have to prove you can play at this level without them when you have to.

With the win putting United into top spot, and subsequently seeded for Friday’s Champions League draw. But United’s South African midfielder says there will be no easy ties in the next round.

"It will get tougher in the next phase but we want to play against the best and be up for the challenge," Fortune added.
